Tinubu Aide Daniel Bwala's Al-Jazeera Interview Sparks Fresh Outcry Over Past Denials

Nigerian presidential aide, Daniel Bwala, was recently featured on Al-Jazeera's 'Head to Head' program, hosted by Mehdi Hasan, leading to a viral interaction that sparked widespread discussion. During the interview, which aired on Friday, March 6, Hasan confronted Bwala with his past critical statements against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which Bwala vehemently denied.
Hasan presented several instances where Bwala had publicly spoken out against President Tinubu. One such claim, according to Hasan, was that Tinubu and his associates had created a militia used to attack opposition members. Bwala responded firmly, stating, “I never said that.” Hasan then pressed further, alleging that Bwala had also claimed this militia group attempted to kill him. Again, Bwala denied this, asserting, “He doesn't have, I never said he tried to kill me.”
The Al-Jazeera anchor continued to challenge Bwala, bringing up a past statement where Bwala allegedly claimed he was unable to eat after President Tinubu 'fraudulently' came into power by rigging the 2023 elections. Bwala reacted with shock, responding, “I never said that! where?” He then added, “What you just said now, I want to put it on record, on my honor, that is not what I said.” However, in the final segments released, Mehdi Hasan presented video evidence directly showing Bwala making these very claims, contradicting his denials on the show.
Beyond the denials of past statements, the interview also saw Mehdi Hasan grilling Bwala on other pertinent issues. Hasan pressed Bwala hard on security statistics, reports from international human rights organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, and Bwala's preparation for the interview. The presidential aide reportedly struggled to provide factual answers to most of these questions and criticisms leveled against the Tinubu administration. Angered by Bwala's perceived inability to factually address these issues, Hasan openly called him "lazy and idle" during the exchange.
