The Devil Wears Prada 2: Justin Theroux Promises 'The Movie You've Waited 20 Years For'

The concept of a "legacy sequel" often evokes a mix of excitement and apprehension among film enthusiasts. While some follow-ups, such as Top Gun: Maverick or the upcoming 28 Years Later, successfully build upon beloved originals, many others fail to capture the magic that made their predecessors iconic. Poised to arrive in theaters almost precisely two decades after the original hit, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is generating significant buzz, with early indications suggesting it will firmly land in the former category of successful continuations.

The highly anticipated sequel boasts the return of its core ensemble, with Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling all reprising their beloved roles. Behind the camera, director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna are also back, ensuring a consistent vision for continuing the narrative. The story is set to reunite the team behind the global fashion magazine Runway, tasked with preserving its legacy within a drastically changed and more cutthroat media landscape.

Among the new additions to the cast, Justin Theroux, who already has experience with successful legacy sequels having joined Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in 2024, has expressed immense confidence in The Devil Wears Prada 2. Speaking to Collider's Steve Weintraub at SXSW, Theroux, while careful not to reveal specifics, enthusiastically endorsed the film. "It's going to sound like I'm trying to get people to go see it, but it's really good. I just saw it recently, and it's very, very good. I can't say much more than that. It'll just spoil things. But it's exactly the movie that you would want exactly 20 years later, and I was just thrilled when I watched it. I think people are going to be very excited about it," he stated.

The pressure to deliver a worthy sequel is substantial, given that the original 2006 film, based on Lauren Weisberger's novel, is widely regarded as one of the most iconic movies of the 2000s, having grossed a dazzling $326.7 million globally. Emily Blunt has also shared positive sentiments, noting that the "magic hadn't faded" when she returned to set after two decades, highlighting the significance of this reunion not just for the audience, but for the cast themselves. In addition to Theroux, other notable newcomers joining the cast include Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, and B.J. Novak, promising a fresh dynamic alongside the familiar faces.

Produced by Wendy Finerman and Karen Rosenfelt, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is scheduled to strut into theaters on April 29, 2026. As its release date approaches, fans and critics alike are eagerly awaiting to see if this highly anticipated sequel can truly live up to the legacy of its predecessor.
