Tensions Flare: Israeli Forces Intercept 'Global Sumud' Flotilla Bound for Gaza, Activists Arrested
The Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission aimed at challenging the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza and delivering essential aid, was intercepted by Israeli military forces in international waters on Thursday. The operation, which began in the early hours, unfolded more than 600 nautical miles from the coast of Gaza, in areas near Greece and Crete. Israeli forces intercepted numerous vessels, leading to the detention of activists from various countries.
The flotilla initially comprised 58 vessels carrying activists and aid. Reports from the group indicated that they lost contact with 11 ships and described 15 as having been boarded by Israeli personnel. Israeli army radio, citing an unnamed military source, stated that seven of the 58 boats had been intercepted near Kythira. Subsequently, the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed the detention of approximately 175 activists from more than 20 boats, noting that these individuals were being transferred "peacefully" to Israel.
Activists on board recounted the details of the interception, stating that military speedboats, identifying themselves as 'Israel', approached their vessels. They reported that lasers and semi-automatic weapons were pointed at them, with orders for participants to move to the front of the boats and get on their hands and knees. Communications were reportedly jammed, and SOS signals were issued. The flotilla group claimed many boats were damaged in what they called a "violent raid," asserting that Israeli soldiers boarded and "systematically disabled" several ships. One activist, Tariq Ra’ouf, who was aboard a vessel still at sea, claimed that some crews were abandoned at sea after their vessels were disabled by engine sabotage, just before a massive storm was due to arrive.
Israel defended its actions as necessary for security reasons. Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, praised the soldiers' "professionalism and determination" in stopping what he characterized as a "provocative flotilla" before it could reach Israeli waters. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the mission as a "PR stunt" and a "provocation without humanitarian aid," maintaining that all humanitarian activity in Gaza should be managed through official channels like the Board of Peace and Israel’s Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC). The ministry also released video footage, which they claimed showed condoms and small bags of drugs found on board, supporting their assertion that the mission lacked genuine humanitarian intent. Israeli officials have consistently defended such interceptions in international waters, arguing their entitlement to act before vessels enter restricted zones.
Conversely, the Global Sumud Flotilla condemned the interception as an "illegal act," emphasizing that it occurred in international waters and targeted vessels carrying humanitarian aid. Organizers reiterated their commitment to delivering aid and raising awareness about the plight of the Palestinian people, whom they believe have been sidelined in international priorities. The group also rejected Israel's past characterizations of having ties to Hamas.
The international community's response to the incident has been varied. The European Commission stressed the importance of upholding freedom of navigation under international law and urged Israel to respect international humanitarian and maritime law. However, the Commission's spokesperson stopped short of explicitly condemning the interception as a breach of international law, maintaining a cautious stance and reiterating previous warnings that such flotilla missions inherently carry risks for participants. In response, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani instructed Italy’s embassies in Tel Aviv and Athens to seek clarification from Israeli and Greek authorities and to ensure the protection of Italian citizens, many of whom were among the detained activists. Similarly, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard spoke with her Israeli counterpart to emphasize that the rights of detained Swedish citizens must be respected, while acknowledging the government’s limited ability to assist those who consciously choose to participate in such high-risk flotilla operations.
This incident is not an isolated event. Both sources mention a previous Global Sumud Flotilla mission in October 2025, during which dozens of vessels were seized and hundreds of activists, including climate activist Greta Thunberg and MEP Rima Hassan, were detained. These past interceptions led to widespread protests across Europe, underscoring the ongoing tensions surrounding attempts to challenge the naval blockade of Gaza.
