Tech Giant Shockwave: Amazon Reportedly Slashes 30,000 Corporate Jobs

Amazon is reportedly poised to initiate a significant round of corporate job cuts, with plans to eliminate as many as 30,000 positions beginning on Tuesday. This move, reported by Reuters citing familiar sources, signifies a concerted effort by the e-commerce and cloud giant to control costs following what the company now perceives as an period of overexpansion during the pandemic-driven boom.
These anticipated layoffs represent a substantial portion, nearly 10 percent, of Amazon’s approximately 350,000 corporate employees, although they constitute only a small fraction of its vast 1.55 million global workforce. If finalized, this would mark Amazon's most extensive series of job reductions since a previous round that saw approximately 27,000 roles eliminated starting in late 2022. An Amazon spokesperson reportedly declined to comment on the matter.
The impact of these job cuts is expected to be felt across a wide range of divisions within the company. Specific areas reportedly in the firing line, depending on evolving financial priorities, include roles within People Experience and Technology (human resources), devices and services, and various operations departments. It is noted that Amazon has already been trimming smaller numbers of positions in several teams, such as devices, communications, and podcasting, over the past two years, indicating a sustained focus on efficiency.
In preparation for the upcoming announcements, managers in the affected business units underwent training on Monday to equip them for communicating the notification emails scheduled for distribution on Tuesday morning. This meticulous preparation underscores the scale and sensitive nature of the impending workforce adjustments.
Under the leadership of CEO Andy Jassy, Amazon has been actively pursuing an efficiency drive aimed at rooting out what he has termed "excess bureaucracy." This initiative includes strategies to reduce layers of management. Jassy has also implemented an anonymous internal system designed to allow employees to flag inefficiencies, a system that has already generated about 1,500 submissions and led to more than 450 process changes. Furthermore, Jassy indicated earlier this year that the increasing integration of artificial intelligence tools is likely to result in further workforce reductions by automating various repetitive tasks.
The final scope of these layoffs remains fluid, as sources close to the situation suggest that the number of job cuts could still evolve as Amazon’s financial strategy continues to adapt. Meanwhile, Amazon’s shares saw a slight increase, rising 1.3% to $227.11 near Monday’s close. The company is slated to report its third-quarter earnings on Thursday, an event that will likely provide further insights into its financial health and strategic direction.
