Swiss Ski Inferno: Sparklers Blamed as Families Despair for Missing Teens in Crans-Montana Blaze

A devastating fire ripped through Le Constellation bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana in the early hours of New Year's Day, resulting in a tragic loss of life and numerous injuries. Swiss authorities confirmed that 40 people died and more than 100 were injured, with many casualties being teenagers. The incident, considered one of Switzerland's worst tragedies, has prompted a five-day mourning period and an intensive investigation into its cause and rapid spread.
Investigators believe the blaze originated when fountain sparklers, mounted on champagne bottles, were held too close to the ceiling, igniting the bar's sound-dampening material. This occurred around 1:30 AM local time on Thursday. Footage from the scene showed flames rapidly spreading across the ceiling, with some revelers initially filming the fire, seemingly unaware of the imminent danger. The Valais Attorney General, Beatrice Pilloud, stated that everything points to these sparkling candles as the ignition source.
A key focus of the ongoing investigation is the foam-like padding on the bar's ceiling. Fire safety experts suggest the material appeared to be "egg box foam," a type of sound-absorbing polyurethane (PU) foam. Untreated PU foam is highly flammable, capable of rapid flame spread and producing dense, toxic smoke, significantly accelerating fire growth and reducing escape time. Officials are examining whether this material complied with safety regulations and if the use of sparklers was permitted. The investigation will also scrutinize the bar's fire safety measures, capacity, the number of people inside, and the accessibility of exit routes, with potential prosecutions if criminal liability is found.
The tragedy left many families in an agonizing wait for news. Among the missing is 15-year-old Charlotte Niddam, a former student of Immanuel College in Hertfordshire, whose family moved to France. The school issued a statement praying for a miracle. Other missing individuals include 16-year-old Swiss national Arthur Brodard, 16-year-old Italian national Achille Osvaldo Giovanni Barosi (an avid painter), 16-year-old junior golfer Emanuele Galeppini (feared dead by the Italian Golf Federation), 16-year-old Giovanni Tamburi, 22-year-old Emilie Pralong, and 15-year-old dual national Alice Kallergis. Many of the injured were in their teens to mid-20s, with nationalities including Swiss (71), French (14), Italian (11), Serbian, Bosnian-Herzegovinian, Luxembourgish, Belgian, Portuguese, and Polish. Some severely burned patients have been transferred to specialized centers across Europe, including 19-year-old French footballer Tahirys Dos Santos, airlifted to Germany.
Eyewitness accounts paint a harrowing picture. French economics student Ferdinand Du Beaudiez recounted seeing a sparkler ignite the insulating foam on the roof. After a failed attempt to extinguish the fire with water, he urged people to escape and bravely re-entered the burning basement bar twice to search for his brother and girlfriend, pulling an unconscious person from the stairs. His brother is now in a coma but expected to recover. Another individual, Tristan Fischer's 17-year-old brother, smashed windows to help people escape, an act that has deeply affected his mental health.
Le Constellation, a large bar capable of holding up to 300 people across two levels (ground floor and basement), had reportedly used sparklers attached to bottles in previous years, as seen in videos dating back to 2024. The formal identification of the deceased is being conducted using "Disaster Victim Identification" processes, involving forensic specialists, doctors, dentists, and investigators, a process expected to take days if not weeks. Families have turned to social media for information and gathered near the police cordon, leaving flowers and candles at a makeshift shrine. A conference center nearby is providing support to the families, and a ceremony for "national mourning" is scheduled for January 9th in Crans-Montana.
