Sweden on Edge: Far-Right Poised for Historic Breakthrough in Tight Election

Sweden is currently in the midst of a critical parliamentary election, with citizens heading to the polls to determine the composition of their new parliament. This election is being closely watched due to the potential for significant gains by the far-right Sweden Democrats, which could see them enter government for the first time in the nation's history.

Conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is seeking to secure another term in office. His ability to remain in power is heavily reliant on the continued backing of the Sweden Democrats, a far-right party that already provides crucial support to his current minority government. Kristersson's main political rival is his predecessor, Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democrats. Approximately eight million individuals are eligible to cast their votes in Sweden, a Nordic nation with a population of around 10.6 million. Reflecting Sweden's consistently high voter turnout, over half of the eligible voters have already submitted their ballots in advance. Polling stations are scheduled to operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time on election day. Initial indications of the election results are expected shortly after voting concludes, with two exit polls anticipated, followed by more reliable partial results several hours later.
