Super Falcons' Esther Okoronkwo Condemns Racist Abuse After Hotel Theft Incident

Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo has revealed that she and several teammates were victims of theft while staying at a hotel in Morocco ahead of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Cash belonging to Okoronkwo, captain Rasheedat Ajibade, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, and defender Michelle Alozie was reportedly stolen at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca before the team moved to Rabat for their Group C fixtures.

Following her disclosure, Okoronkwo was subjected to racist abuse on social media, with users posting monkey emojis and other offensive comments. Reacting to the abuse, Okoronkwo called for unity and resilience, stating, "Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that. We move forward with pride, unity and determination. See you on the pitch."

Authorities have since arrested a suspect, who admitted involvement in the theft, returned the stolen money, and was sentenced to six months in prison. Nigerian journalist Colin Udoh also urged football governing bodies to take decisive action against the racist attacks directed at the player.

The Nigeria Football Federation condemned the abuse, describing discrimination as unacceptable in football and society. The federation reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and well-being of the players, insisting the team remains focused on its tournament ambitions. The Super Falcons will begin their WAFCON 2026 campaign against Malawi before taking on Zambia and Egypt as they pursue a record-extending 11th continental title.
