Super Eagles' Triumph: Osimhen's Heroics Seal Dominant 4-1 Victory Over Gabon
)
Nigeria's Super Eagles have significantly advanced their campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing a decisive 4-1 victory over Gabon in their qualifying playoff semi-final in Rabat, Morocco. This crucial match, held at the Complexe Sportif Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan, was pivotal for Nigeria, who are determined to avoid missing consecutive World Cups after their absence from Qatar 2022. The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Ahead of the clash, there was immense pressure and anticipation. Former Venezuelan star Alejandro Moreno emphasized Victor Osimhen's goal-scoring form as crucial for Nigeria's success. Similarly, former Nigerian international Peterside Idah expressed strong confidence, citing Nigeria’s superior squad depth, historical dominance against Gabon, and recent attacking form, particularly a 4-0 win over Benin Republic. Idah highlighted Osimhen as a 'talisman' whose goals would make the difference. Fulham defender Calvin Bassey also voiced the squad's confidence, acknowledging a sluggish start to the qualifying campaign but affirming that 'hope has been restored.'
Former Super Eagles assistant coach Simon Kalika echoed this optimism, predicting a 4-0 or 5-0 win if coach Eric Chelle implemented the right tactics and organization, stressing that Nigeria possessed abundant talent. However, the team's build-up was not without its challenges; a pre-match standoff over unpaid bonuses saw the squad briefly refuse to train, raising questions about tactical preparation, though the issue was resolved.
Head coach Eric Chelle named a strong starting XI for the match against Gabon. Stanley Nwabali retained his position in goal. The defense featured Bright Osayi-Samuel and Zaidu Sanusi as full-backs, with Calvin Bassey partnering young Benjamin Fredrick at center-back. The midfield was anchored by Wilfred Ndidi, who captained the team, and Alex Iwobi, making his 90th Super Eagles appearance. On the wings, Ademola Lookman returned after a one-match suspension, joining Samuel Chukwueze, while Victor Osimhen led the attack alongside Akor.
The match itself was a hard-fought encounter. Akor Adams opened the scoring for Nigeria, taking advantage of a defensive error from the Panthers. However, Gabon leveled the score in the 89th minute through Mario Lemina, pushing the game into extra time. Despite this late setback, the Super Eagles regrouped. Chidera Ejuke, who came on as a substitute, restored Nigeria's lead in extra time. Victor Osimhen, who had been uncharacteristically wasteful with several chances in regular time, redeemed himself emphatically by scoring a crucial brace in extra time, sealing a dominant 4-1 victory for Eric Chelle’s side.
Individual performances were pivotal. Victor Osimhen's two goals brought his international tally to 31, moving him closer to Rashidi Yekini's all-time record of 37 goals. Akor Adams' opening goal was widely celebrated by Nigerians on social media, cementing his growing importance. Benjamin Fredrick, still only 20, delivered another assured performance in defense, impressively neutralizing Gabon's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and demonstrating maturity beyond his years, suggesting he could be a long-term starter over William Troost-Ekong. Chidera Ejuke's impact off the bench was also significant, providing competition for Ademola Lookman, who had a subdued performance. The synergy between Sevilla stars Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke, carrying over from their club form, proved to be a potent attacking asset for Nigeria.
While the victory was commanding, coach Chelle's tactics were scrutinized. His continued use of a two-man midfield (Iwobi and Ndidi) was seen as risky, potentially exposing gaps against stronger opposition. Questions were also raised about keeping Ndidi on after an early yellow card. Nonetheless, Ndidi played a key role in setting up Ejuke's goal, and the team ultimately prevailed. This comprehensive win propels Nigeria closer to an intercontinental playoff spot, which is a vital step toward automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Nigeria will now face the winner of the other playoff semi-final between Cameroon and DR Congo, as they look to solidify their place on the global football stage.
