Super Eagles Dominate Algeria, Advance in AFCON: A Nation's Roar!
)
Nigeria's Super Eagles showcased a commanding performance, securing a decisive 2-0 victory over Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-finals. This triumph propelled them into the semi-finals, where they are set to face host nation Morocco in Rabat. Goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams in the second half sealed the win, underscoring Nigeria's physical athleticism, tactical prowess, and unwavering determination.
Among the standout performers, full-back Bright Osayi-Samuel earned significant praise for his exceptional display. Stepping into the role of regular right-back in Ola Aina's absence, Osayi-Samuel started every game of Nigeria's AFCON 2025 campaign, consistently providing both defensive solidity and attacking thrust. Against Algeria, his all-action performance included one crucial block, two clearances, six recoveries, and seven duels won, alongside several unsettling attacking runs. Even from the sidelines, injured Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface applauded Osayi-Samuel's efforts with a simple yet powerful message: “Omo. Osayi for right back today.” Despite being spotted in discomfort late in the match, Osayi-Samuel reassured fans and media that he would be “absolutely fine” for the semi-final, attributing the issue to cramps rather than a serious injury, specifically mentioning his toes feeling cold.
Nigeria's dominance was evident throughout the match. According to Opta, Algeria failed to attempt a single shot in the first half of an AFCON match for the first time in 30 games since analysis began in 2010. The Super Eagles maintained 57% possession and registered 13 shots to Algeria's mere three, with none of Algeria's attempts on target. Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane was forced into action three times, denying early chances from Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen, while Akor Adams narrowly missed breaking the deadlock in the first half. The breakthrough came swiftly after the restart: two minutes into the second half, Victor Osimhen powerfully headed home Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross. Just seven minutes later, Akor Adams doubled Nigeria’s lead, calmly slotting the ball into the net after a fluid team move involving Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi, effectively putting the tie beyond Algeria's reach. Adams almost netted a brace later, hitting the post from an Osimhen cross.
Midfielder Alex Iwobi was another pivotal figure, earning glowing praise from fans for his masterclass performance. Iwobi quietly dictated the rhythm of the game, consistently finding space and unlocking Algeria’s defence. He provided the crucial pre-assist for both Nigerian goals and created a clear-cut opportunity in the first half. His vision and consistency are highlighted by his astonishing 46 through balls completed in the tournament, more than double that of any other Super Eagles player. Nigerian fans celebrated his influence, with one supporter comparing him to football royalty: “France had Zidane, Spain had Iniesta, Netherlands had Cruyff, Nigeria has Alex Iwobi.”
Akor Adams' goal celebration also carried significant weight and symbolism. After scoring Nigeria's second goal, Adams performed the iconic Patrice Lumumba pose, dedicating his goal to the Congolese pan-African leader. This act emulated Congolese superfan Michel Kuka Mboladinga, who had gained widespread attention for his motionless, raised-arm tribute to Lumumba throughout DR Congo's matches. The celebration was seen as a moment of 'poetic justice', particularly after Algerian forward Mohamed Amoura had previously mimicked the pose in a mocking manner following a Round of 16 victory, drawing social media backlash due to Lumumba’s historical significance in the struggles for independence in both Congo and Algeria.
Reactions to Nigeria's victory were overwhelmingly positive. Head coach Eric Chelle expressed immense pride in his players but quickly shifted focus to the upcoming challenge against Morocco, emphasizing the need to
