Super Eagles' Defensive Hierarchy Shakes Up: Nwaiwu Climbs Past Rangers Star
Chibuike Nwaiwu has dramatically risen in value to become Nigeria's second most valuable defender at €18 million, surpassing Emmanuel Fernandez. While Calvin Bassey retains the top spot, Nwaiwu's strong performances for Trabzonspor highlight his growing prominence. Both Nwaiwu and Fernandez have also made their Super Eagles debuts, marking an exciting period for Nigerian football.
The latest Transfermarkt valuations have brought significant attention to the shifting landscape of Nigerian defensive talent, with Super Eagles centre-back Chibuike Nwaiwu making a notable ascent. The Trabzonspor defender has climbed above Rangers' Emmanuel Fernandez in the updated rankings, positioning himself as the second most valuable Nigerian defensive player, trailing only the established Premier League star, Calvin Bassey.
Chibuike Nwaiwu, at 23 years old, has seen his market value soar to an impressive €18 million. This valuation places him on par with Nottingham Forest's Ola Aina and, notably, €2 million above Emmanuel Fernandez's current €16 million valuation. This rapid increase in value is particularly striking considering Nwaiwu's recent move to Trabzonspor in January 2026 from Wolfsberger for a reported €5.5 million. Since his transfer, the Port Harcourt-born defender has quickly become a pivotal figure for his Turkish club.
For the 2026/27 Süper Lig season, Nwaiwu has started all six of Trabzonspor's opening matches, accumulating 533 minutes on the pitch and demonstrating consistent performance. A standout moment in his season was a commanding display during Trabzonspor's emphatic 4-0 victory over Galatasaray on September 19. His commitment to Trabzonspor is long-term, with his club contract extending until June 2030. Interestingly, Nwaiwu was reportedly close to a Premier League move last summer, with Fulham and Crystal Palace having shown significant interest in securing his services.
Emmanuel Fernandez, while now ranked below Nwaiwu, has also experienced a remarkable rise in his own market value, currently standing at €16 million. The London-born centre-back made his move to Scottish giants Rangers from Peterborough United in July 2025 and has since firmly established himself as a key player at Ibrox. At the time of the latest statistical update, Fernandez had started all seven of Rangers' Premiership matches, playing every minute, and was instrumental in Derek McInnes' side securing a crucial 1-0 victory over rivals Celtic on September 20.
Both Nwaiwu and Fernandez share an important milestone in their international careers, having made their debuts for the Nigerian Super Eagles on the same date, March 27, 2026. In their initial international appearances, Fernandez has managed to score one goal in his first two caps, whereas Nwaiwu has collected three caps for Nigeria without yet registering a goal.
Sitting at the pinnacle of Nigeria's most valuable defenders is Calvin Bassey, with a commanding valuation of €28 million. This creates a €10 million gap that Nwaiwu would need to bridge to claim the top spot. Bassey, who holds the distinction of being Nigeria's most expensive defensive transfer signing, is now firmly established as one of the Premier League's premier defenders. This season, he has made six appearances for Fulham, playing 478 minutes, and showcasing his defensive capabilities with 17 clearances and 20 duels won. The Fulham star has also frequently captained his club this season and played a pivotal role for the Super Eagles during the September Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
