Super Eagles Assemble: World Cup Qualifier Camp Kicks Off Amidst High Stakes and Squad Arrivals
)
The Super Eagles have officially opened their camp in Uyo, Nigeria, to commence crucial preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. These pivotal Group C fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa are seen as essential for the team's aspirations to secure a ticket to the expanded World Cup in North America.
Early arrivals at the team's Four Points by Sheraton hotel included captain William Troost-Ekong, defender Bruno Onyemaechi, and goalkeeper Amas Obasogie, who checked in on Monday morning. The camp steadily swelled with the arrival of other key players such as Felix Agu, Chidozie Awaziem, Benjamin Frederick, Adebayo Adeleye, Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. By Wednesday morning, the squad count reached 16 with the latest additions of Ademola Lookman and Cyriel Dessers. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali also arrived late Tuesday night, assuaging earlier concerns about his potential absence due to injury. Prominent players like Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Tolu Arokodare, and Christantus Uche are still anticipated to join the 23-man squad before Wednesday's training session.
Under the guidance of head coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles find themselves in a challenging position in Group C. They currently sit fourth with seven points, a significant six points behind group leaders South Africa, with Rwanda and Benin both holding eight points. With only the group winner guaranteed a spot in the 2026 World Cup, the pressure for maximum points is immense.

Despite being "written off" by many, Chelle remains optimistic and focused on the team's remaining four matches, asserting that they are poised to "surprise a lot of people." His brief tenure as head coach has seen a 2-0 victory against Rwanda and a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in two qualifiers. The team's first official training session is scheduled for Tuesday at the practice pitch of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Meanwhile, Hugo Broos, head coach of the South African national football team, has indicated his primary focus is on their upcoming match against Lesotho, rather than immediately on the Super Eagles. Broos, whose side currently holds 13 points and leads in the qualifiers, stressed that all their upcoming fixtures are "must-win games." Addressing a press conference, he stated he is "unfazed" by Nigeria's star-studded squad and will finalize his strategy for the Nigeria clash after assessing his team's performance against Lesotho. South Africa previously played a 1-1 draw against the Super Eagles in June 2024.
The Super Eagles' critical schedule includes hosting Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, followed by an equally vital away game against South Africa in Bloemfontein next Tuesday. With their World Cup dreams hanging in the balance, securing back-to-back victories is considered non-negotiable for Nigeria to reinvigorate their qualification campaign and maintain hopes of participating in the prestigious tournament.
