Successor Crowned: HBO Max’s ‘Friends’ Replacement Emerges as Breakout Hit

Rachel Sennott’s comedy series, I Love LA, has rapidly become a standout performer for HBO Max, consistently ranking within the Top 5 in major markets including the United States, Australia, France, and Spain. The show’s broad international appeal is evident in its Top 10 placements in countries such as Hungary, Malaysia, Georgia, Armenia, and Croatia, solidifying its status as a global hit.
Premiering on November 2, 2025, I Love LA quickly garnered critical acclaim and an early renewal for Season 2, just weeks after debuting. The sitcom follows Maia Simsbury, portrayed by Sennott, an ambitious talent manager whose meticulously crafted personal and professional worlds are thrown into chaos when her estranged best friend Tallullah, a prominent influencer played by Odessa A’zion, unexpectedly returns. The series boasts a strong ensemble cast including True Whitaker, Jordan Firstman, Josh Hutcherson, and Leighton Meester, with guest appearances from acclaimed actors such as Ayo Edebiri and Elijah Wood.
Critics have lauded I Love LA, awarding it an impressive 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting its rapid rise as one of HBO’s most compelling comedies. In the U.S., the show averages nearly two million cross-platform viewers per episode. Sennott has described the series as “Entourage for the internet girls,” capturing the authentic realities of Gen-Z navigating economic uncertainty, pandemic aftermath, and social media’s pervasive influence.
Sennott recently shared insights into the creative development of Ayo Edebiri’s standout cameo as Mimi Rush, a delightfully delusional British pop star, during her appearance on the I’m Having an Episode podcast. The character was conceived through informal conversations between Sennott and Edebiri before being fully integrated into the show. Producers Emma Barrie and Max Silvestri were so impressed that they invited Edebiri into the writers’ room to actively shape her memorable guest appearance.
Reflecting on her dual role as creator, writer, and lead actor, Sennott described the experience as energizing rather than overwhelming, joking, “By the end, I felt like I had just given birth.” She also highlighted the series’ nuanced approach to social media, noting that the show portrays online life as a natural and integrated aspect of the characters’ daily routines without over-explanation.
New episodes of I Love LA air Sundays on HBO and HBO Max, with the highly anticipated Season 1 finale scheduled for December 21, 2025. Fans are encouraged to follow Collider for ongoing updates and behind-the-scenes insights.
