Stylist Sparks Backlash With ‘Brutal’ Advice for Women Over 50: Ditch These 3 Wardrobe Staples

A personal stylist has ignited a fierce debate online by urging women over 50 to purge three popular Autumn/Winter wardrobe staples. With colder weather approaching, Nerys,a fashion expert, took to social media to deliver her “brutal style advice,” claiming these items “scream you are over 50” and project an image of having “given up on life.”

First on Nerys’s list of fashion faux pas are gilets. She questioned their purpose, stating, “You've given up, you've completely given up - if you're not going on a hike, why are you wearing a gilet?” Her strong recommendation is for women in their fifties to discard them unless engaged in outdoor activities requiring such attire.

Similarly, Nerys advised against wearing fleeces for everyday outings. She reiterated her stance, asking, “The same principle - if you're not going on a hike or a long walk with the doggies, why are you wearing a fleece to pop to the supermarket. Why?” implying that fleeces are exclusively suitable for active, outdoor pursuits.

The third item, which Nerys deemed “the worst one of them all,” is the waterfall cardigan. She emphatically advised, “you need to bin it now - you need to take it to the charity shop or you need to get it on Vinted or just get rid of it.” Adding to her controversial reasoning, Nerys claimed that a waterfall cardigan “looks like a vagina from the front,” making its immediate disposal a necessity.

Nerys hinted at a potential part two clip for more fashion advice, but in the meantime, encouraged women to “check their wardrobes.” Her TikTok video, posted under@style_by_nerys1,quickly amassed over 227,800 views, sparking widespread discussion.

Social media users were sharply divided by Nerys’s advice. While some concurred, with one user writing, “I’ve not seen anyone in a waterfall cardi for ages. They are awful, I agree,” and another adding, “Couldn’t agree more. I'm 62 and wouldn’t be seen dead in any of those,” others vehemently disagreed. Critics slammed her "ageist opinions," with one person commenting, “You really have awful ageist opinions. I deliver flowers and I couldn’t live without the fleece or especially the gilet.” Another user asserted, “No one should tell anyone to stop wearing something over a certain age,” highlighting the contentious nature of her style recommendations.
