Studentland Shakedown: Manchester Police Seize £6K in Drug Bust
Police in Manchester have seized approximately £6,000 worth of illegal drugs during a proactive patrol in the city's student district, as the new university term begins. Plain-clothed officers intercepted a suspected drug deal, leading to the arrest of a 25-year-old man and the discovery of various Class A and B substances. This operation underscores increased police efforts to ensure student safety and combat criminality in student-populated areas.
Police in Manchester have conducted a significant £6,000 drug bust in the heart of the city's student district, coinciding with the commencement of the new university term. The operation unfolded on Friday, September 25, 2026, on Lower Ormond Street, an area adjacent to All Saints Park and just off Oxford Road.
Plain-clothed officers from the City of Manchester Robbery Tasking Team were on patrol when they observed a man and a woman displaying suspicious behaviour. Initially, the officers believed they might be witnessing a robbery; however, it quickly became apparent that they had stumbled upon a suspected drug deal.
Following this realization, a detailed search of a nearby vehicle was conducted. Inside, officers discovered a substantial quantity of suspected illegal drugs, estimated to be worth approximately £6,000. The illicit haul included suspected cocaine, MDMA powder, ketamine, ecstasy tablets, cannabis resin, and herbal cannabis.
As a result of the discovery, a 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing both Class A and Class B drugs with intent to supply.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) emphasized that this successful seizure comes at a crucial time, as thousands of new and returning students are arriving in Manchester for the new academic year. In response, GMP officers are increasing patrols around university campuses, student residential areas, and the city's night-time economy. They are also actively providing crime prevention and personal safety advice to the student community.
Inspector Leon McLaughlin, from GMP's City of Manchester Robbery Tasking team, commended the officers' actions, stating, "This is an excellent example of proactive policing. Our officers spotted something that didn’t look right, acted on their instincts and ultimately removed a significant quantity of suspected drugs from our streets." He further reiterated GMP's commitment to student welfare and public safety, adding, "Thousands of students are currently arriving in Manchester for the new academic year and we want them to be able to enjoy everything the city has to offer safely. Our officers will continue to patrol areas popular with students, including residential areas and the night-time economy, to tackle criminality and ensure people feel safe. Anyone looking to supply illegal drugs in our city should know that our officers are out there, both in uniform and plain clothes, and we will take action when we suspect criminal activity."
