Stephen King's 40-Year Masterpiece Finally Hits HBO Max!

Stephen King's prolific literary career has yielded approximately 100 adaptations, encompassing both series and movies, with notable classics such as Brian De Palma's "Carrie" and Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" cementing their places in cinema history. King's enduring popularity continues to drive new adaptations, with several emerging in the past year alone. Among these recent releases, a particular movie adaptation stood out, earning critical acclaim and achieving box-office success.

This standout film is "The Long Walk," an adaptation of King's very first novel, which he penned eight years before his debut published work, "Carrie," during his university years. King's dystopian vision of the future, as depicted in "The Long Walk," has profoundly influenced numerous films over the decades, though an official adaptation of the novel itself only materialized recently. The movie garnered some of the best reviews for any King adaptation to date and proved to be a significant box-office success, grossing over $60 million worldwide against a reported budget of $20 million.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, renowned for his work on five installments of "The Hunger Games" franchise—itself inspired by King's "The Long Walk"—the film marked a brief departure for Lawrence from the larger-budget "Hunger Games" universe. "The Long Walk" has achieved a "Certified Fresh" 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While not the highest-rated King adaptation on the aggregator, it has been recognized as a top adaptation due to the extensive pool of critics who reviewed it. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus highlights "Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson's soulful performances" for bringing "a lot of heart" to the dystopian tale, making it a "life-or-death ordeal for its characters but a riveting ride for audiences."

The film, with a runtime of 108 minutes, was written by JT Mollner and Stephen King, and produced by Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Francis Lawrence, and Cameron MacConomy. Its cast features Cooper Hoffman as Raymond Garraty (#47), David Jonsson as Peter McVries (#23), and Mark Hamill as The Major. Following its successful theatrical run, "The Long Walk" is now set to reach a new audience as it debuts on HBO Max domestically on July 10.
