Statham Unleashed: Action Icon Plays Himself in Meta Comedy from 'Bullet Train' Director!

Jason Statham has experienced a challenging start to the year, notably with his latest action thriller, "Shelter." Despite opening to the best critical reviews for a Statham action film in over a decade, "Shelter" has struggled at the box office, grossing less than $30 million against a $50 million budget. This film, directed by Ric Roman Waugh, released on January 30, 2026, with a runtime of 107 minutes, also featured Ward Parry as a writer and producers like Greg Silverman, Jason Statham himself, Jon Berg, John Friedberg, and Brendon Boyea. Statham starred as Mason Bodhi alongside Rae Breathnach as Jesse.
However, Statham's future slate looks promising with several anticipated projects. He is set to star in "Mutiny," co-starring Annabelle Wallis, which is slated for release in August. Furthermore, he will reprise his role as Adam Clay in a sequel to "The Beekeeper" at the start of 2027, with Timo Tjahjanto taking over directorial duties from David Ayer.
A significant development in Statham's career trajectory is his much-anticipated reunion with director David Leitch. While Statham has collaborated with many directors multiple times, his work with Leitch has been limited to a single project until now. David Leitch, who made his feature directorial debut in 2017 with "Atomic Blonde" and followed it with "Deadpool 2" in 2018, first worked with Statham on the highly successful 2019 "Fast & Furious" spin-off, "Hobbs & Shaw." This blockbuster also featured Dwayne Johnson and Vanessa Kirby. Since "Hobbs & Shaw," Leitch has been busy, directing Brad Pitt in "Bullet Train" and most recently, "The Fall Guy" in 2024, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.
Fans have long awaited a sequel to "Hobbs & Shaw," and although writer Chris Morgan has confirmed he is developing a script, concrete updates have been scarce.
The news of Statham and Leitch's reunion comes with the announcement of a new meta-action comedy titled "Jason Statham Stole My Bike." In this unique project, Statham will play himself. While specific plot details are currently under wraps, the film is reported to have an $80 million budget, significantly larger than the $40-50 million range of recent Statham films such as "The Beekeeper," "A Working Man," and "Shelter." The film is being touted as "the role of a lifetime" for Statham and is expected to feature multiple large-scale action set pieces.
