Star Wars Saga in Flux: 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' Faces Box Office Woes, Future Revealed

Star Wars has made its highly anticipated return to the big screen for the first time in seven years with the theatrical debut of The Mandalorian and Grogu. This film continues the narrative from the popular Disney+ series, bringing the titular bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his foundling companion Grogu to cinemas. Written and directed by series creator Jon Favreau, the movie offers a comprehensive story that is accessible even to those unfamiliar with the show, while referencing past seasons.
The film essentially condenses what could have been the fourth season of the television series into a cinematic experience. Mando and Grogu are tasked by Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) of the New Republic to pursue an unusual bounty. This mission quickly unravels into a complex web of twists and turns, featuring the return of characters familiar from both the live-action series and older animated Star Wars shows. The broader context of the Imperial Remnant and Grand Admiral Thrawn's (Lars Mikkelsen) machinations looms in the background, though the movie primarily focuses on its immediate plot.
The central antagonists are revealed to be the treacherous Hutt Twins, who strike a deal with the New Republic: they will expose the location of an unseen Imperial warlord, Admiral Coin, in exchange for the retrieval of their nephew, Rotta (Jeremy Allen White). However, the Hutt Twins are double-crossing both sides. After Mando and Rotta escape a perilous death match orchestrated by black market salt crystal dealer Janu (Jonny Coyne), Rotta exposes Janu as the elusive Admiral Coin. Mando and Zeb capture Janu and deliver him to Colonel Ward, infuriating the Hutt Twins, who then employ bounty hunter Embo (Dave Filoni), a Clone Wars alumnus, to recapture Rotta and Mando.
Grogu, having evaded capture, teams up with resourceful Anzellans to travel to Nal Hutta. There, he rescues Din Djarin, who is forced to battle the Twins' deadly Dragon Snake. Grogu's actions, breaking Djarin out of the monster's pit and tending to him after he's poisoned, highlight his significant growth and evolution into his father's protector. This dynamic perfectly embodies the theme of 'The Old Protect the Young, and the Young Protect the Old'.
After Mando's recovery, he and Grogu decide to stay and liberate Rotta, who is being brutally tortured by his aunt and uncle. They execute a daring rescue into the heavily guarded Hutt Twins' stronghold, engaging in intense battles with massive guard droids and later, Embo and the Hutt Twins themselves. Once freed, Rotta heroically joins the fight against his relatives. The conflict culminates with the Hutt Twins falling into the lair of their own Dragon Snake, where they are devoured. Embo and his loyal hound, Marrok, manage to escape before their bosses' demise, surviving to fight another day.
Despite the Hutt Twins' defeat, the trio faces overwhelming opposition from the Droid Gotra. However, unexpected aid arrives from Colonel Ward and the Adelphi Squadron, who, guided by the Anzellans, launch an attack on the Hutt Twins' base. Mando calls for an airstrike, creating an escape route for himself, Grogu, and Rotta, effectively destroying the Twins' criminal empire.
Upon their return to Adelphi Base, Mando and Grogu bid farewell to Rotta, who chooses to remain and join the New Republic. Colonel Ward acknowledges Djarin's newfound connection to the New Republic and the Adelphi Rangers, signifying Mando's realization that he is part of something larger. The film concludes with Djarin and Grogu departing in their Razor Crest, with Grogu taking the controls and blasting them into lightspeed.
The ending of The Mandalorian and Grogu does not directly set up future big-screen Star Wars adventures concerning Grand Admiral Thrawn, Project Neuromancer, or the Great Mothers, nor does it resolve the mystery of Thrawn's cargo from Ahsoka Season 1. Instead, it prioritizes the deepening of Mando and Grogu's relationship, Grogu's development as a capable warrior, and Rotta's emergence as a heroic figure. While not a direct setup for a larger crossover event, the film offers a fun theatrical adventure, with its enjoyment depending on the audience's investment in the characters and the broader Star Wars universe.
The Mandalorian and Grogu premiered on May 22, 2026, with a runtime of 132 minutes. Its initial box office performance saw it earn $12 million during Thursday previews, which was lower than Solo: A Star Wars Story's $14.1 million opening. Critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes stands at 63%, while audiences have given it a more favorable 88% Popcornmeter score, a positive sign for potential box office longevity. Key cast members include Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin / The Mandalorian, Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward, Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, and Steve Blum as Zeb Orrelios. The film was produced by Ian Bryce, Jon Favreau, and Kathleen Kennedy, with writing credits to Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Noah Kloor.
