Star Player's Return: Porzingis Declares Full Health Post-Illness Scare!

After a six-game hiatus due to persistent health concerns, Kristaps Porzingis made his second appearance with the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night in a challenging 104-97 loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Despite the team's defeat, Porzingis contributed nine points, five rebounds, five assists, and one block in 23 minutes of play, expressing optimism about his physical recovery. He stated, "I felt like my body is coming back to what it needs to be," and added, "One workout (prior to the game) and felt pretty decent." This marked a significant step in his return, having warmed up earlier for a game in Houston and completed a practice session the day before.

Porzingis, acquired by the Warriors from the Atlanta Hawks on February 4, had an initial debut on February 19 against the Boston Celtics, where he played 17 minutes and expressed readiness for a more demanding role. However, two mornings later, he fell ill, leading to another extended absence of six games. This period allowed the Warriors' training staff to delve deeper into the health issues that have plagued him for over a year, significantly disrupting his career. It was revealed that Celtics doctors had diagnosed Porzingis with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) after he contracted a virus in late February of the previous year. POTS is an autonomic condition characterized by a dramatic increase in heart rate, dizziness, and fatigue, symptoms that have consistently interfered with his ability to stay on the court. Prior to the trade, he was limited to just 17 games with the Hawks.

The journey back has been mentally taxing for Porzingis, particularly after a trade where he was eager to contribute immediately. "Especially getting traded somewhere else, I wanted to get out there as soon as possible," he noted, adding that "Sitting out a couple games was stinging me a little bit." While his performance against the Thunder felt "OK," he admitted to feeling "a little heavy" and acknowledged his shot wasn't yet in a good rhythm.

Adding to the complexities of his situation, Warriors coach Steve Kerr inadvertently caused a stir last week by suggesting on local radio that Porzingis did not actually have POTS, labeling it "misinformation." Kerr later retracted his statement, calling it a "stupid mistake" to comment on something he lacked detailed knowledge about. Porzingis addressed the incident, stating, "It wasn't ideal, because it put something out again. So people start talking again. I told Steve it was OK. I know he didn't mean anything, didn't want to create hype around my health. He just said what he knew at the moment."

Looking ahead, the Warriors plan a careful approach to Porzingis's reintegration. He is scheduled to rest on Monday night for the front end of a back-to-back series in Utah and is expected to play on Tuesday night when the team returns home to face the Chicago Bulls. With only about 20 games remaining in the season, Porzingis is focused on increasing his minutes to build a strong rhythm in anticipation of the postseason. He conveyed his determination, saying, "Only 20 games left or so, I want to catch a really good rhythm and see if we can do anything in the postseason."
