South African Parliament Mourns Cultural Icon Cynthia Shange

Cynthia Shange, born in Lamontville, Durban, made history in 1972 as the first Black woman to win a Miss South Africa title, a watershed moment during apartheid that publicly challenged the regime's racial exclusion of Black identity and womanhood.

Parliament's presiding officers described her as a symbol of "African excellence" whose impact extended far beyond her acting career.

Her daughter, media personality Nonhle Thema, is among the family members to whom Parliament extended condolences.

Shange served as an enduring role model for generations of Black South African women in the arts, at a time when systemic barriers made visibility in mainstream media a profound act of defiance.
