South Africa on Edge: KZN Braces for Extreme Weather, Flood Warnings Issued
KwaZulu-Natal faces a severe orange Level 6 disruptive rain warning from the South African Weather Service, effective until Wednesday midnight. Heavy rainfall, heightened by a cut-off low, threatens widespread flooding, infrastructure damage, and hazardous driving conditions across coastal and inland areas. Residents are urged to take immediate precautions and avoid unnecessary travel as emergency teams remain on high alert.
Residents across KwaZulu-Natal are urged to take immediate and heightened precautions as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has upgraded its disruptive rain warning from a yellow Level 4 to an orange Level 6. This escalated warning, effective from Tuesday afternoon until midnight on Wednesday, signifies a high risk of significant impacts from persistent showers and thunderstorms across the province.
Initially, a Level 4 warning was issued for Tuesday, 28 July, through to Wednesday evening, 29 July, with the eThekwini region expected to be significantly affected. However, recent forecast updates and model information indicate much higher rainfall accumulations than initially predicted, leading to the upgrade. Forecaster Ayanda Ntsele explained that the warning was raised after a cut-off low developed over the interior, bringing widespread scattered showers and thundershowers.
The upgraded Level 6 warning specifically targets coastal areas between Port Shepstone in the south and St Lucia in the north, as well as nearby inland areas, which are expected to experience the worst conditions. Several municipalities across the province are affected, including eThekwini Metro, KwaDukuza, uMhlathuze, Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, Mandeni, Mtubatuba, Big Five Hlabisa, uMlalazi, and Umzumbe.
The anticipated heavy and persistent rainfall could lead to widespread flooding. SAWS has warned of potential flooding in settlements, on roads and bridges, and in low-lying areas. This poses a serious risk to both residents and property, with the possibility of damage to infrastructure and mud houses. The wet weather is also expected to create hazardous driving conditions due to poor visibility and slippery road surfaces, making travel more dangerous.
In response to these severe weather conditions, residents living in flood-prone areas, including informal settlements, are urged to take necessary precautions and remain alert as conditions deteriorate. It is highly recommended that where possible, residents remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Motorists are advised to reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance, and exercise extreme caution when driving in heavy rain.
The eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that its Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services are on high alert and ready to respond to any weather-related incidents. Disaster teams across the affected municipalities are also on standby to mitigate the impact of the severe weather.
