Prominent Nigerian Lawmaker Suspended Indefinitely Over Alleged Brutal Domestic Abuse

The Cross River State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended Ovat Agbor, the lawmaker representing Obubra I state constituency, over alleged violent conduct.

The decision was reached on Thursday following a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo, with the assembly condemning the alleged actions as inconsistent with the ethical standards expected from members of the legislative arm of government.

During the deliberations, Davies Etta emphasized the critical need for the assembly to protect its integrity.

The House resolved that Mr. Agbor be barred from all legislative activities, and an ad hoc committee was constituted to investigate the matter and report its findings back to the house.

Following the resolution, Mr. Agbor was escorted out of the chamber by the sergeant-at-arms in compliance with the directive.

Speaker Elvert Ayambem asserted the assembly's commitment to maintaining discipline, stating the house would not condone any misconduct capable of bringing the legislature into disrepute.

Ayambem clarified that the suspension would remain in force pending the outcome of the committee's investigation. He stressed that lawmakers must conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the trust reposed in them by the people.

The allegations of violent conduct against his wife triggered widespread public reaction. A video circulating on social media reportedly showed a woman with severe facial injuries, including bruised eyes and lips, identified as Agbor's wife.

While the Cross River State Police spokesperson declined to comment, the suspended lawmaker also did not respond to calls or messages seeking his comment.

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State and his wife criticized the lawmaker's alleged actions, describing them as irresponsible.

Meanwhile, Glory Agbor, the wife of the suspended lawmaker, issued a statement on Thursday apologizing to her husband and his family.

She urged the public to respect their privacy, vehemently debunking attempts to paint her family in a negative light, and stated that she and her husband are at peace with each other. Glory

Agbor further added that despite issues arising, they had amicably resolved their differences, reiterating that "no marriage is totally perfect."

She also announced her withdrawal from the legislators' wives association and pleaded for forgiveness, apologizing to her husband and entire family over what she described as misconceptions.
