Shockwave in British Politics: Reform UK Stuns Labour, Claims Largest Party Status

Reform UK has announced it is now the largest political party in Britain, claiming to have surpassed Labour's membership. Nigel Farage's party indicates over 268,000 members on its website's live tracker, with some reports suggesting around 270,000. Farage stated, “As we have suspected for some time, Reform has overtaken Labour to become the largest political party in British politics – a huge milestone on our journey to win the next election. The age of two-party politics is dead.” This development is seen as a significant step for Reform UK in its ambition to perform strongly in the next general election, bolstered by recent substantial donations, including a record-breaking £9 million from Thailand-based businessman Christopher Harborne.

Meanwhile, the Labour party has reportedly seen a significant decline in its membership, with leaked internal figures suggesting paid-up membership has fallen below 250,000. This represents a substantial loss of around 100,000 activists since the last election. Official party accounts published in August for the year ending December 2024 showed 333,235 members, a decrease from 370,450 at the end of 2023. This trend continues a consecutive decline from a peak of over 500,000 members under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership in December 2019, when figures stood at 532,046.
