Shockwave in Boxing: Fury Plummets as New Contender Storms Top 10 Pound-for-Pound!
ESPN has released its latest pound-for-pound boxing rankings, revealing significant shifts and new entries following a series of high-profile fights. The retirement of former top-ranked fighter Terence Crawford has paved the way for a new No. 1, while established veterans and rising stars solidify their positions or make their debut on the esteemed list. The panel, comprised of boxing experts like Andreas Hale, Joe Tessitore, and Teddy Atlas, utilized a descending points system to determine the rankings, with results current through April 15, 2026.
Tyson Fury, despite a recent unanimous decision victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov in London, did not manage to re-enter the top 10 pound-for-pound rankings. Fury, who boasts a record of 35-2-1 with 24 KOs and is currently ESPN's No. 2 heavyweight, has a history of five retirements, each ending in a triumphant return. However, this latest comeback lacked the definitive statement needed to push him back into the elite pound-for-pound conversation. To achieve this, Fury would likely need a more decisive performance against a higher-caliber opponent, a chance he might get if his called-for fight against No. 7 heavyweight Anthony Joshua later this year materializes.
Making a notable debut at No. 10 in the pound-for-pound rankings is cruiserweight Jai Opetaia. He earned his spot following a unanimous decision win over contender Brandon Glanton in his Zuffa Boxing debut in March. Opetaia, with an undefeated record of 30-0 (23 KOs), demonstrated his dominance in his first fight on American soil, although he was later stripped of his IBF title for a second time. He is widely regarded as the best cruiserweight in the world, with questions now surrounding how Zuffa Boxing will guide his journey to becoming an undisputed champion.
1. Oleksandr Usyk (RECORD: 24-0, 15 KOs, Heavyweight): With the retirement of Terence Crawford, Oleksandr Usyk ascends to the top spot. At nearly 39 years old, Usyk shows no signs of slowing down, exemplified by his one-sided knockout victory in a rematch against Daniel Dubois in July 2025. His impressive resume includes two wins each against Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, and Daniel Dubois. Usyk is slated to defend his WBC heavyweight title against kickboxer Rico Verhoeven on May 23 at the iconic Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
2. Naoya Inoue (RECORD: 32-0, 27 KOs, Junior featherweight): "The Monster" Naoya Inoue maintains his high standing after an incredibly active 2025, which saw him complete a four-fight year, concluding with a wide unanimous decision win against David Picasso in December. Inoue is now preparing for a highly anticipated mega fight against fellow Japanese champion Junto Nakatani on May 2 at Tokyo Dome.
3. Jesse Rodriguez (RECORD: 23-0, 16 KOs, Junior bantamweight): "Bam" Rodriguez solidified his status by dominantly defeating Fernando Martinez, adding the WBA title to his collection. Martinez, previously undefeated, was made to look like a novice before Rodriguez secured a 10th-round knockout. At just 25, Rodriguez is the youngest fighter on the list, known for his entertaining style and immense potential to reach the very top.
4. Shakur Stevenson (RECORD: 25-0, 11 KOs, Junior welterweight): Stevenson makes a significant jump in the rankings after pitching a near shutout against Teofimo Lopez Jr. in January, claiming a major world title in his fourth weight class. The 28-year-old is operating at an exceptional level, dominating opponents and rarely conceding rounds. His future holds many possibilities, including unifying titles at 140 or 135 pounds, or even moving up to 147 pounds.
5. David Benavidez (RECORD: 31-0, 25 KOs, Light heavyweight): "The Mexican Monster" David Benavidez enters the top five after a TKO victory over Anthony Yarde in November 2025. Benavidez has announced his move to cruiserweight to challenge unified champion "Zurdo" Ramirez on May 2 in Las Vegas, aiming to become a three-division champion. A move back to light heavyweight for fights against Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol remains in his long-term plans for what promises to be a massive 2026.
6. Junto Nakatani (RECORD: 32-0, 24 KOs, Bantamweight): Despite a controversial unanimous decision win over Sebastian Hernandez in December, Nakatani secured his part of the all-Japanese showdown with Naoya Inoue, set for May 2 at Tokyo Dome. The performance against Hernandez, a tougher-than-expected opponent, may have been an "off night" due to a new weight class, but Nakatani now has a prime opportunity to silence any doubts by facing Inoue.
7. Devin Haney (RECORD: 33-0, 1 NC, 15 KOs, Welterweight): Devin Haney decisively defeated Brian Norman Jr., one of welterweight's biggest punchers, to become the WBO champion. At 27, the three-division champion silenced critics who questioned him after the Ryan Garcia fight, showcasing an impressive skill set and instincts by brilliantly outboxing a powerful opponent.
8. Jaron "Boots" Ennis (RECORD: 35-0, 31 KOs, Interim junior middleweight champion): Ennis' undeniable talent and dominant run, which includes a TKO1 victory over Uisma Lima in October 2025, bring him onto the pound-for-pound list. While his opposition has been questioned, his brilliant switch-hitting and high boxing IQ are clear. A long-anticipated fight with Vergil Ortiz Jr. has been delayed, and Ennis is now set to challenge WBO and WBA junior middleweight champion Xander Zayas on June 27.
9. Canelo Alvarez (RECORD: 63-3-2, 39 KOs, Super middleweight): Canelo Alvarez re-enters the rankings due to elimination, specifically Crawford's retirement. Despite a loss to Terence Crawford in September 2025, which carries no shame given Crawford's stature, all eyes are on Canelo's return from elbow surgery in September. He aims to reclaim titles in the wide-open super middleweight division.
The rankings are determined by a panel of 17 ESPN boxing experts, with votes assigned on a descending points system (10 points for first place, 9 for second, and so on). In case of a tie, the fighter with the highest ranking, then the one with the most votes at that ranking, takes precedence. Fighters such as Oscar Collazo, Vergil Ortiz Jr., and Ryan Garcia also received votes, highlighting the depth of talent across various divisions.
