Shocking Showdown: 'Five Nights at Freddy’s 2' Dominates Box Office While Unveiling Spooky Costume Secrets

"Five Nights at Freddy’s 2," the blood-soaked sequel to the popular horror film, premiered on December 5, picking up one year after Mike Schmidt, his sister Abby, and Vanessa Shelly survived their initial encounter with the killer animatronics at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. This installment delves deeper into the terrifying lore, with a new series of events unfolding as Abby attempts to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy. A significant plot point involves the awakening of the Marionette, a puppet-inspired animatronic possessed by the spirit of Charlotte Emily, a young girl murdered by William Afton in the early 1980s. The Marionette seeks revenge and, to leave Freddy Fazbear’s, takes over the bodies of victims, starting with Lisa, a paranormal documentary host, and later, Abby. These transformations result in haunting part-marionette, part-human hybrids, aptly named the Lisaonette and the Abbionette, characterized by lengthened limbs and glowing eyes.
Costume designer Whitney Anne Adams played a crucial role in bringing these iconic transformations to life. Her process began with an extensive deep dive into the cult-classic video game’s animatronic-filled world and its dedicated fandom. Adams meticulously gathered every available photo, book, and immersed herself in online communities like the ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Reddit. For eagle-eyed fans, two iconic elements of the Marionette’s design—buttons and stripes—were subtly incorporated into Lisa and Abby’s pre-transformation costumes to foreshadow their fates. Abby's purple striped sweater in the second half of the film directly echoed the stripes on the Marionette's arms and legs, a deliberate choice by Adams to foreshadow her possession. Similarly, Lisa's pre-transformation costume featured three white buttons, a key design aspect of the Marionette, achieved by modifying an Old Navy henley and adding fabric tiers to echo stripes.
Creating the costumes for the Lisaonette and Abbionette puppets required significant collaboration between Adams, the visual effects department, and the Jim Henson Creature Shop. Initially, Adams anticipated a fully visual effects approach, but the decision was made to blend real costume elements with visual effects. Adapting Abby’s already designed costume for the towering Abbionette puppet presented a challenge in achieving correct proportions so it would appear as a sweater while covering the torso adequately for visual effects transitions. This specificity necessitated hand-knitting the greyscale version of Abby’s sweater and three others over a month. Conversely, designing the Lisaonette’s costume first allowed Adams to work backward when adapting it for the human character, showcasing the unique process of costuming both actors and puppets.
Commercially, "Five Nights at Freddy’s 2" has been a significant success. It took under a week to surpass the $65 million lifetime domestic haul of M. Night Shyamalan's
