Shocking Blow! Torrez vs. Sanchez Title Eliminator Called Off Due to Knee Injury!
The highly anticipated IBF heavyweight title eliminator bout between undefeated Richard Torrez Jr. and Frank Sanchez, originally scheduled for March 28, has been called off. Sanchez suffered a knee injury, leading to the postponement of this crucial fight, as reported by ESPN combat sports reporter Andreas Hale.
This pivotal matchup was set to open the pay-per-view card featuring Sebastian Fundora's WBC junior middleweight title defense against Keith Thurman at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. However, Cuba's Frank Sanchez (27-1, 18 KOs with 1 No Contest) has been forced to withdraw due to inflammation in his surgically repaired right knee, necessitating a rescheduling for a later date.
Both Torrez Jr. (14-0, 12 KOs) and Sanchez are ranked among ESPN's top heavyweights, holding the No. 9 and No. 10 spots respectively. The winner of this eliminator was designated to become the mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk, who currently holds the IBF, WBC, and WBA heavyweight titles. Torrez Jr. last fought in November, securing a stoppage win against Tomas Salek, while Sanchez achieved a third-round TKO victory over Ramon Olivas Echeverria in February.
The cancellation also brings Oleksandr Usyk's future into focus. Usyk is slated to defend his WBC title against kickboxer Rico Verhoeven on May 23 at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Notably, Usyk recently expressed his intention to have only three more fights before retirement, explicitly naming Rico Verhoeven, the winner of the Fabio Wardley vs. Daniel Dubois bout, and Tyson Fury as his final opponents, thereby excluding the winner of the Torrez Jr. and Sanchez eliminator from his stated career-ending matchups.
