Shocker! Brentford Humiliates Man Utd 3-1, Fernandes Misses Penalty As Amorim Faces Axe

Brentford delivered a significant blow to Manchester United's aspirations this weekend, securing a commanding 3-1 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium. This result extends Manchester United's unwelcome streak of failing to achieve back-to-back Premier League wins since May 2024 and intensifies the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim, whose side has now suffered three defeats in six league games.
The Bees started the match with fierce determination, with Igor Thiago rocketing them into an early lead in the 8th minute after a lofted pass from Jordan Henderson. Thiago continued his impressive form, bagging his and Brentford's second goal in the 20th minute, following a burst into the box by Kevin Schade and an initial parry from United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. This early dominance left the Red Devils reeling.
Manchester United managed to claw one back before halftime when Benjamin Sesko netted his first goal for the club, beating Caoimhin Kelleher at the third attempt. However, a crucial moment in the second half saw United's chance for a comeback thwarted. After Nathan Collins pulled back Bryan Mbeumo in the box, referee Craig Pawson awarded a penalty and showed Collins a yellow card. Despite calls for a red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, VAR confirmed the yellow, deeming Mbeumo not in control of the ball. Bruno Fernandes then saw his subsequent penalty saved by Kelleher, a pivotal miss that maintained Brentford's lead.
Ruben Amorim's agitation was palpable throughout the match, frequently shaking his head in disbelief at the ease with which Brentford penetrated United's penalty area. His side was criticized for a lack of urgency and tame pressing, with fans eventually chanting for more attack. Amorim remained steadfast in his 3-4-2-1 system, which he later defended, stating, "When we win it's not the system, when we lose it's the system." He attributed the loss to United playing into Brentford's style of long balls and second balls, rather than settling their own game.
Brentford, in contrast, displayed energy, organization, and conviction. Impressive performances came from players like Michael Kayode at right-back, whose lung-busting runs troubled United's left flank, and Super Eagles star Frank Onyeka, who entered in the 81st minute to stabilize the midfield. The victory was sealed in injury time when Mathias Jensen rifled home the third goal, leading to celebrations among the Brentford faithful.
Despite the mounting pressure and fan dissatisfaction, Amorim reiterated his confidence in his ability to lead Manchester United forward. He emphasized the need to win the next game and improve certain aspects. Adding a touch of glamour to the proceedings, supermodel Claudia Schiffer and Hollywood actor Taron Egerton were among the spectators. Schiffer, whose filmmaker husband Matthew Vaughn is an investor in Brentford, was seen enjoying the match, dressed in a Bees shirt, while Egerton, an Arsenal supporter, also watched the action unfold.
