Scarlett Johansson Eyes Blockbuster Return, In Talks for Major 'The Batman 2' Role

Scarlett Johansson, a prominent star known for her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is reportedly in advanced negotiations to join the cast of "The Batman Part II." This potential move marks a major crossover within the comic book film landscape, as Johansson would star opposite Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader in the DC Studios production.
Directed by Matt Reeves, who also helmed the critically and commercially successful first film, The Batman Part II is scheduled to begin shooting next spring, with an anticipated theatrical release on October 1, 2027, from Warner Bros. The original The Batman, which opened in March 2022, garnered an impressive $772 million at the worldwide box office, setting high expectations for its sequel.
Details regarding Johansson's potential role are being kept strictly under wraps, with sources indicating that information is securely held. While Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman is not expected to return, Johansson's involvement is hinted to be a significant turn for the two-time Oscar nominee. There is speculation that she could even portray a major villain in the film, especially considering the possibility of Barry Keoghan's Joker stepping into the spotlight after his tease in the first movie.
The script for this much-anticipated sequel was completed by Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin in June, with Reeves expressing immense pride in their work and the extreme lengths taken to maintain secrecy. Robert Pattinson, for instance, reportedly received the script in a highly secured, locked pouch. Jeffrey Wright is confirmed to return as Commissioner Jim Gordon, and the film is expected to pick up in the aftermath of the Emmy-winning Colin Farrell-led spin-off series, The Penguin.
The path to The Batman Part II has not been without challenges, including several delays. Initially, James Gunn and Peter Safran had announced an October 2025 release when they took over the reins of the DCU in 2023, but this date was subsequently pushed back by two years. However, with the script now finalized and the team assembling, things are looking positive. The production has bolstered its creative crew, with Erik Messerschmidt stepping in as cinematographer, replacing Greg Fraser, and Emmy-winning "Andor" production designer Luke Hull bringing his talents to the set.
Beyond her potential dive into the DC Universe, Johansson has been incredibly busy with other high-profile projects. She recently starred opposite Jonathan Bailey as Zora Bennett in the box office hit Jurassic World: Rebirth, which grossed over $800 million for Universal. She has also landed the lead role in Mike Flanagan's upcoming "The Exorcist" film under Blumhouse and is set to appear in James Gray’s "Paper Tiger." Furthermore, Johansson added director to her resume with her debut drama, Eleanor the Great, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was released by Sony Pictures Classics. Her packed schedule underscores the significance of her potential commitment to The Batman Part II.
The news of Johansson eyeing a role was first reported by Nexus Point News, though DC Studios has remained silent on the casting. Her potential inclusion promises to be a massive addition to what is shaping up to be another star-studded lineup inhabiting Gotham City, further fueling the buzz among fans and industry insiders ecstatic about the script.
