Royals React as Canada Rocked by Deadly School Shooting: Nine Killed, Young Girl Fights for Life
Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada, became the scene of one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history recently, leaving at least ten people dead, including the assailant, and dozens wounded.
The tragic event saw a 12-year-old girl, Maya Gebala, fighting for her life after sustaining gunshot wounds to the head and neck, while the close-knit community grappled with unimaginable loss. The incident unfolded on a Tuesday, with an attacker described as a “female in a dress” opening fire at the school.
Local reports later identified the suspected assailant as Jesse Strang, 18, who is reported to be transgender. After carrying out the brutal attack, the shooter died by suicide at the school.
In addition to the eight fatalities found within the school, including the attacker, two more bodies were discovered at a nearby residence, bringing the total death toll to ten. At least 27 individuals, including children and teachers, were wounded, with two suffering life-threatening injuries.
Among the critically injured was Maya Gebala, a skilled defender on the local Tumbler Ridge Raptors under-13 ice hockey team. Her mother said Maya was airlifted to Vancouver Children’s Hospital as doctors worked urgently to stabilize her condition.
Expressing her anguish, Cia Edmonds said her daughter was undergoing efforts to repair the damage caused by gunshot wounds to the head and neck. A GoFundMe page was launched to provide financial support for the family as they face an uncertain recovery journey.
Relatives described overwhelming fear as they wait for updates on Maya’s condition. Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of sheer terror inside the school as chaos erupted. One student described how classrooms went into immediatelockdown, with desks and tables used to barricade doors.
Police response was swift, with officers arriving within two minutes in what authorities described as a rapid response. Both the secondary and elementary schools were placed under temporary closure for the remainder of the week.
Tumbler Ridge, a small mountain town, is widely known for its tight-knit community and peaceful setting. Local officials described it as an unusually safe place where residents rarely lock their doors.
Mayor Darryl Krakowka said he would know every victim personally, calling them family rather than residents. The tragedy has left the town submerged in collective grief. National and international leaders issued strong condemnation following the attack.
King Charles expressed deep shock over what he described as a senseless act of violence. The Prince and Princess of Wales extended their solidarity with Canadians during the difficult time.Prime Minister Mark Carney demonstrated national leadership by canceling an overseas trip to address the crisis.
He emphasized the need for national unity as the country mourns. Authorities confirmed an ongoing investigation into the shooter’s motive and connections. Details of the victims remain withheld pending formal notification of families.
The massacre is being described as a historic tragedy, marking one of the deadliest shootings in Canada in decades. The incident is expected to reignite national debate around school safety and gun control laws.
