Rivian Stuns Market with R2 Lineup, Range, and Pricing Reveal!

The 2027 Rivian R2, a midsize electric SUV, is poised to significantly expand Rivian's presence globally, with an anticipated price point designed to appeal to a broader market. Unlike its R1 predecessor, the R2 will not feature a truck variant due to its new unitized construction, where the battery serves as a structural floor pan, making the accommodation of a pickup bed exponentially more challenging.

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has fulfilled his promise of a $45,000 base price for the R2, though this will likely be increased by a $1,495 destination charge, bringing the effective starting cost to $46,495. The entry-level Standard model is slated for release in late 2027 as a 2028 model year vehicle. This base configuration will feature a single, rear-mounted motor generating 350 horsepower and 355 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0–60 mph acceleration in 5.9 seconds. It will come with a standard-range battery offering over 275 miles of range.

Preceding the base model, the Standard Long Range RWD variant is expected to arrive in the first half of 2027. While maintaining the same output and acceleration as the base model, this version will utilize an 87.9-kWh battery pack to extend its range to 345 miles, priced at $49,985.

Standard R2 models will be well-equipped, including a 525-watt, five-speaker audio system, power heated front seats and steering wheel, and four distinct drive modes: All-Purpose, Conserve, Snow, and Sport. These models will ride on 19-inch wheels and offer a choice of five exterior colors, exclusively paired with a Black Crater interior. Optional upgrades will include 20-inch wheels, a spare tire, a subscription to Autonomy+ L2+ hands-off/eyes-on cruise control, and the option to upgrade to the Premium model’s dual-motor, 450-hp, 537-lb-ft all-wheel-drive system.

The Mid-Grade R2 Premium trim, starting at $55,485, is scheduled for launch earlier, in late 2026, as a 2027 model. This trim comes standard with a potent dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, delivering 450 horsepower and 537 lb-ft of torque, significantly improving the 0–60 mph time to 4.6 seconds. It will also utilize the long-range 87.9-kWh battery, providing an estimated 330 miles of range. The Standard trim AWD model is expected to match these specifications.

The Premium trim offers substantial equipment upgrades, including 20-inch wheels, tow hooks, an All-Terrain drive mode, an enhanced interior, a premium 975-watt nine-speaker audio system, matrix-LED adaptive headlights, the signature Rivian Torch flashlight integrated into the door, and rear glass that motors down into the hatchback. Optional features for the Premium include the Autonomy+ subscription and spare tire, 21-inch wheels, a towing package, and a Performance upgrade. Buyers of the Premium trim will have a wider selection of six exterior colors and an additional interior option, Coastal Cloud.

The R2's interior also features advanced technology, with driver and information screens capable of displaying detailed information rendered with Unreal Engine crispness and incredible resolution.
