Red Devils Resurgent: Man United Secure Victory Against Crystal Palace with Unlikely Heroes
)
The last Sunday of November brought a series of captivating Premier League encounters. The day's action commenced with Manchester United traveling to face Crystal Palace. Later, West Ham United hosted a struggling Liverpool side, while Nottingham Forest contended with Brighton & Hove Albion, and Aston Villa squared off against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The much-anticipated climax of the day featured a high-stakes London derby between Chelsea and Arsenal, promising a full day of thrilling football updates from across Europe.
In the lead-up to their fixture at Selhurst Park, Manchester United's form was a significant talking point. After enjoying a five-game unbeaten streak, a disheartening home defeat to Everton reset their progress, once again bringing into question Ruben Amorim's suitability as manager. The manner of the Everton loss, where Amorim reportedly maintained a five-defender system despite playing against ten men for much of the game, fueled these doubts. The upcoming match against Crystal Palace was expected to be a stern test, especially considering United's poor away record, with only one win in their last eleven away league games and no victory at Selhurst Park since 2020. Crystal Palace, on the other hand, had reason for confidence, celebrating the recent success of former talents Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, who featured for Arsenal and Bayern Munich respectively in midweek, showcasing the Eagles' strong track record in nurturing world-class talent. Despite these departures in successive seasons, Palace continued to impress. A win on Sunday could potentially propel them into the top four, contingent on other results, while a loss risked them being overtaken by United in the congested Premier League standings.
The match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United ultimately concluded with a rather unconvincing 2-1 victory for the Red Devils, marking their first win in four games after their recent loss to Everton. Manchester United had to rely on crucial goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount to orchestrate a comeback after initially trailing. Crystal Palace took the lead in the first half through a penalty from Jean Phillipe Mateta. Early in the game, Crystal Palace endured an initial scare when a long throw from Diogo Dalot led to chaos in their penalty area, forcing Dean Henderson to deny Casemiro from close range. Although Casemiro later headed wide from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick, Manchester United largely failed to pose a sustained threat in the first half. Defensive uncertainties, compounded by the low winter sun, created several opportunities for the home side. Jean-Philippe Mateta twice capitalized on errors from Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro but could not convert, and Senne Lammens comfortably saved efforts from Daichi Kamada and Adam Wharton. Palace eventually broke the deadlock when Yoro fouled Mateta in the box, leading to a retaken penalty that Mateta converted, giving Oliver Glasner’s men a well-deserved half-time lead and marking his seventeenth league goal of 2024.
Despite their recent struggles in league meetings against Palace, United re-emerged in the second half with renewed vigor. Joshua Zirkzee broke a 24-match scoring drought with a superb volley to equalize. Mason Mount then completed the turnaround, securing the winning goal from a meticulously executed free-kick routine. While Palace attempted to mount a response, United effectively controlled the latter stages of the game, securing only their second win in twelve away league matches. For Crystal Palace, the result was a bitter pill, marking their second successive 2-1 defeat after holding a lead and their first home loss against Manchester United since 2020.
