RAF Fairford Terror Plot: Sixth Suspect Nabbed in Major Security Sweep
A 27-year-old UK-Iranian dual national has been arrested in London over a suspected terror plot near RAF Fairford, bringing the total arrests to six as police investigate possible foreign involvement.
A significant development has occurred in the ongoing investigation into a suspected terror plot near RAF Fairford, with police announcing a new arrest.
A 27-year-old man, identified as a dual UK/Iranian national, was arrested this afternoon (Thursday 1 October) in the London borough of Westminster. He is being held on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. This arrest follows activity that took place close to RAF Fairford on Sunday.
In addition to the arrest, a second man, a 26-year-old UK national, has also been questioned under caution as part of the same investigation.
Counter Terrorism Policing has confirmed that searches of two properties are currently being carried out in the same area where the arrests were made, indicating a thorough examination of potential evidence.
This latest development brings the total number of individuals arrested in connection with the suspected terror plot to six.
Previously, over the weekend, five British nationals, all in their mid-20s, were arrested near the military site in Gloucestershire on suspicion of explosives offences and terrorism. These five individuals were subsequently bailed under investigation on Monday.
Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, Vicki Evans, underscored the complexity of the investigation, stating, "The investigation into circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is hugely complex, and our specialist teams are interrogating multiple lines of enquiry."
She further clarified that authorities are exploring all possible angles, including potential foreign state involvement. Ms. Evans extended gratitude to the public for their continued support and patience as the investigation progresses.
Counter Terrorism Policing continues to appeal to the public for any information that might assist the investigation. Individuals with relevant information are encouraged to report it via gov.uk/ACT or by calling the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321.
The five men who were initially arrested on Sunday 27 September remain on police bail.
