Princess Eugenie's New Destiny: A Special Role After Andrew's Disgrace

Prince Andrew has officially relinquished all of his royal titles, including the Dukedom of York, following discussions with King Charles and his wider family. This decision means he is no longer a Counsellor of State, a significant role within the monarchy. Counsellors of State are appointed by Letters Patent to act in the monarch's stead if the King is temporarily unable to perform his duties due to illness or absence abroad. This role is typically held by the Sovereign's spouse and the next four individuals in the line of succession who are over the age of 21.
With Prince Andrew stepping back, his youngest daughter, Princess Eugenie, is now poised to assume the important role of Counsellor of State. The current roster of Counsellors now includes Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie. It is noteworthy that due to both Prince Andrew and Prince Harry stepping back as working royals, the Princess Royal (Anne) and the Duke of Edinburgh (Edward) were promoted under the Counsellors of State Act 2022. This occurred despite Princess Eugenie being ahead of the King's siblings in the line of succession.
However, Princess Eugenie and her older sister, Princess Beatrice, are not working members of the Firm. This distinction ensures that the sisters remain unaffected by their father's decision to step down from his remaining royal titles and roles. Their titles are retained because they were born as male-line grandchildren of a monarch, a rule established by King George V in 1917, making them immune to their father's loss of titles.
In a newly released statement, Andrew confirmed the immediate return of all his titles, including his Dukedom of York. His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, known as the Duchess of York, has also given up her royal title. Andrew's statement explained his rationale: "In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life."
He further elaborated, "With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me." Andrew's decision comes amidst a lengthy scandal stemming from his association with Jeffrey Epstein, a controversy that previously led him to step down from royal duties in 2019 following a contentious Newsnight interview.
