President Tinubu's Low-Key 74th Birthday Draws Tributes Amidst National Reflection

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked his 74th birthday on Sunday, adhering to his tradition of observing the occasion in a low-key manner, aligning with the prevailing mood of the nation. In a special message, President Tinubu expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve Nigeria and thanked citizens for their heartfelt messages, display of love, and prayers. He also acknowledged those who extended good wishes through newspaper advertisements and broadcast airtime, specifically appreciating his wife, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, for her "kind and loving words," and Vice President Kashim Shettima for his supportive remarks.
First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu had earlier sent a warm birthday message to her husband, praying for his divine health, strength, joy, and peace as he leads Nigeria towards greater prosperity. She also expressed her deep affection and pride, stating, "I love you and I am so proud of you," and used the Yoruba praise name "Akanbi, omo olodo ide."
Reflecting on his administration, President Tinubu acknowledged the challenges encountered since initiating reforms but expressed optimism, noting "a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel" despite temporary setbacks like the ongoing Middle East crisis. He asserted his conviction that the administration would succeed in building a brighter future for Nigerians and future generations. Emphasizing collective effort, he stated that the credit for positive outcomes belongs not solely to him, his 'Renewed Hope' team, or the government, but to shared endeavors. He reaffirmed his administration's determination to confront current challenges and overcome them with the continued support of the Nigerian people, urging collective work towards a stronger, more prosperous, and resilient nation that will be the pride of Africa.
Congratulatory messages poured in from various prominent figures across the country. Former President Goodluck Jonathan extended his warmest congratulations, praying for peace and a brighter future for Nigeria. Jonathan highlighted such milestones as moments for reflection on a life dedicated to service and national progress, wishing President Tinubu continued strength, wisdom, and a long life in good health.
The leadership of the National Assembly also offered felicitations. Senate President Godswill Akpabio described President Tinubu as an "audacious and visionary leader" whose bold economic and governance reforms are already yielding tangible dividends, expressing optimism for the country's sustained recovery and growth. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, hailed President Tinubu as a pro-democracy figure and seasoned public administrator who has made significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey. Deputy Senate President Jubrin Barau prayed for President Tinubu's sound health and long life, expressing optimism for his re-election in 2027 to continue his reform and infrastructural development agenda. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu praised Tinubu’s visionary and impactful leadership, acknowledging its role in shaping Nigeria’s trajectory and positioning the country for greater progress under the 'Renewed Hope Agenda'.
Further congratulations came from the business community and state governors. Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, commended President Tinubu for his steadfast leadership, grit, focus, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria. He praised Tinubu's life as symbolic of hope, demonstrating boldness and decisiveness. Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State lauded the President's extensive experience in both business and politics, highlighting his passion, vision, and commitment to service, as well as his legacy as a pro-democracy fighter. Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, paid tribute to Tinubu as a visionary and courageous leader whose love for Nigeria is undeniable, noting his resilience and bold commitment to reform and national renewal, especially during challenging times and efforts to restore democratic rule and reboot the economy.
Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), congratulated President Tinubu on behalf of the party, acknowledging his pivotal role in Nigeria's democratic development and governance. Yilwatda described Tinubu's life as defined by vision, resilience, and commitment to nation-building, from his democratic struggles to his tenure as Governor of Lagos State and now as President. He highlighted the ongoing reforms under Tinubu's leadership, emphasizing policies aimed at economic stability, growth, improved governance, infrastructure development, and social interventions, despite temporary discomfort. Yilwatda affirmed the APC's pride in the administration's direction and reform agenda, praying for divine wisdom, strength, and grace for the President to lead Nigeria to peace, stability, and enduring prosperity, stating, "Nigeria is grateful for your service. The All Progressives Congress is proud of your leadership. History will remember your courage."
In a significant political development, Abia State Governor, Mr. Alex Otti of the opposition Labour Party, joined four other South-east governors in backing President Tinubu's re-election bid for 2027. Governor Otti clarified that he would not oppose the President's candidacy, stating, "I am not running for President. So, why would I oppose his presidency?" He considered his support a "natural thing" given his role in the same administration, while criticizing some politicians for creating divisions for selfish ambitions. This declaration followed a similar endorsement from Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of APGA, who stated his party would not field a presidential candidate in 2027. However, the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) reacted cautiously, advising President Tinubu against accepting Otti's offer, describing it as a "poisoned chalice" and a "desperate and deceptive tactic aimed at political survival," according to Chief Uche Aguoru, the state Publicity Secretary of APC.
