President Kagame Kicks Off Groundbreaking MWC25 Kigali Event

MWC25 Kigali, a prominent event focused on Africa's digital ambitions, is set to be officially opened by His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, on October 21 at the Kigali Convention Centre. This marks the third consecutive occasion President Kagame will inaugurate the event, underscoring its growing significance in the region. Vivek Badrinath, Director General of the GSMA, expressed his delight in welcoming President Kagame, emphasizing the collaborative environment where innovators, policymakers, and business leaders will converge to address critical issues driving Africa’s digital future.
The event serves as a crucial platform for engaging with leaders from various sectors to shape the next chapter of Africa’s digital transformation. Discussions will span a wide range of topics, including smartphone affordability, the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), advancements in connectivity, and the evolution of fintech solutions across the continent. MWC25 Kigali is designed to bring together government representatives, enterprises, and start-ups from the entire technology ecosystem to explore how innovation can accelerate Africa’s digital transformation.
The agenda for MWC25 Kigali is structured around four key themes: Connected Continent, The AI Future, Fintech, and Africa’s Digital Frontier. In addition to these overarching themes, the event will feature several specialized summits. These include a comprehensive two-day Fintech Summit, a dedicated 5G Summit exploring next-generation connectivity, and the inaugural Security Summit, which will address pressing cybersecurity concerns.
For the first time, the GSMA Ministerial Programme will be integrated into the MWC Kigali agenda, offering an invitation-only forum for exploring vital policy and regulatory topics. This program will delve into areas such as AI governance and the broader digitalization of African economies, providing a crucial space for high-level discussions among influential stakeholders. Furthermore, the event will host the Orange Social Ventures Prize award ceremony, recognizing social innovators making an impact across Africa and the Middle East.
Adding another layer of depth, the Future of Education & Work in Africa (FEWA) initiative will be co-located with MWC25 Kigali. FEWA will convene AI experts, policymakers, and innovators with the shared goal of developing scalable solutions for transforming education and workforce development across the continent. MWC Kigali 2025 receives substantial support from its founding and headline sponsors Huawei, MTN, and ZTE, with Orange serving as an industry sponsor. Key event partners include the Ministry of ICT and Innovation (MINICT) and Smart Africa, highlighting a strong public-private collaboration to drive the continent's digital agenda.
