Premier League Thriller: Haaland’s Late Penalty Sparks Manchester City Title Charge Against Arsenal
)
Manchester City reignited the Premier League title race with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Liverpool at Anfield. Erling Haaland’s stoppage-time penalty secured the win, cutting league leaders Arsenal’s advantage to just six points and reshaping perceptions of City’s championship challenge.
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville praised City’s resilience, noting they had “entered the title race in style.” Neville added: “Well, ten minutes ago, the title race was done. It was now or never for Man City – it’s now!
Sometimes in a title race, a team will grab an opportunity; City have grabbed one.” He highlighted the pressure City can now exert on Arsenal, calling the scene at Anfield “blue bedlam.”
Liverpool appeared poised for victory after Dominik Szoboszlai’s sensational free-kick put the hosts ahead. However, City responded with a late equalizer from Bernardo Silva, setting the stage for Haaland’s historic penalty. The late strike sparked celebrations as City secured all three points.
Manager Pep Guardiola reiterated the team’s commitment to chasing Arsenal, stating: “All we can now do is breathe down the neck of Arsenal and be there.
If they sleep, if they make a mistake, then we have to use it.” Guardiola also expressed pride in conquering a historically tough venue like Anfield, highlighting the significance of the victory.
Haaland emphasized the psychological impact of the win: “The title race isn’t over until it’s over. I’ve never won here before, so to come to Anfield and get a victory is an incredible feeling.
It’s always difficult here because of the history between City and Liverpool over the last 10 years.” He also praised the travelling supporters, noting the post-match atmosphere as “amazing.”
The win carried historical significance for Manchester City. It marked their second league victory at Anfield under Pep Guardiola and their first in front of a full crowd since the 2020-21 season, which was played behind closed doors.
It also secured City’s first league double over Liverpool in 89 years, a feat not achieved since the 1936-37 season. Haaland’s penalty was additionally the latest-ever winning goal by a visiting team at Anfield in Premier League history.
City now have a prime opportunity to further cut Arsenal’s lead to three points when they face Fulham on Wednesday, intensifying the title race ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Brentford on Thursday.
The victory also provides crucial momentum for Manchester City in their pursuit of multiple honors this season, including the Champions League and Carabao Cup.
