Pop Princess in Peril: Britney Spears Reportedly Arrested for DUI

Pop superstar Britney Spears was recently arrested in Ventura County, California, on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI). The arrest, confirmed by Billboard via records from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and reported by Variety and TMZ, occurred on Wednesday, March 4, at 9:28 p.m. PT. Spears was subsequently booked at 3:02 a.m. PT and released at 6:07 a.m. PT. Her court appearance is scheduled for May 4. Billboard sought further information from Spears’ representatives and the Ventura County Police Department following the incident.
This is not Spears' first encounter with legal issues. In 2007, she turned herself in to Los Angeles police on charges of hit-and-run and driving without a valid license. Video footage from that period showed her vehicle steering into a parked car before she drove away. Just a few months after these incidents, she was placed under a legal conservatorship, an arrangement that governed her life and finances for the subsequent 13 years. The hit-and-run case itself was dismissed in 2008, but the conservatorship remained a significant part of her life until its termination.
The news of her alleged DUI comes amid other recent developments in Spears' personal life, including the apparent deletion of her Instagram account. In recent years, she had frequently used the platform to share videos of herself dancing, enjoying time on the water, and spending time with her son Jayden. She shares Jayden and her older son, Sean, with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. Federline relocated to Hawaii with their sons in 2023, and Spears had posted about reuniting with Jayden at Christmastime in 2024, after a two-year separation.
Adding to the public narrative surrounding her, Kevin Federline published his memoir, "You Thought You Knew," in October. In the book, Federline openly expressed his profound concerns for his famous ex-wife's wellbeing. He wrote, "The truth is, this situation with Britney feels like it’s racing toward something irreversible. It’s become impossible to pretend everything’s OK. From where I sit, the clock is ticking, and we’re getting close to the 11th hour. Something bad is going to happen if things don’t change, and my biggest fear is that our sons will be left holding the pieces."
Spears was quick to respond publicly to the contents of Federline's memoir. On Instagram, she articulated her distress, stating that "The constant gaslighting from ex-husband is extremely hurtful and exhausting." She also expressed her deep desire for a relationship with her children, adding, "I have always pleaded and screamed to have a life with my boys. Relationships with teenage boys is complex. I have felt demoralized by this situation and have always asked and almost begged for them to be a part of my life."
Beyond her ex-husband, Spears has also openly addressed her tumultuous relationship with her broader family. She has previously accused her father, Jamie Spears, who managed her estate for many years under her conservatorship, of exploitation—allegations he has denied. Her frustration and pain were evident in her Christmas 2024 post, where she sarcastically wished "a merry late Christmas to my beautiful family who have never disrespected me, harmed me, ever done anything completely unacceptable or caused unbelievable trauma, the kind you can’t fix." Furthermore, in February, she shared on Instagram her fear of her family, stating she was "lucky to even be alive with how my family treated me once in my life and now I’m scared of them."
