Political Shake-Up: Kwankwaso Ally Dumps NNPP

Engr. Sagir Ibrahim Koki, a prominent political ally of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and the serving member representing Kano Municipal Federal Constituency, has officially resigned his membership from the party. This significant departure, effective from Tuesday, November 11, 2025, was communicated through a detailed letter addressed to the chairperson of Zaitawa Ward, Kano Municipal, citing an intractable internal crisis within the NNPP's national leadership as the primary catalyst.
Koki, a seasoned businessman and contractor who was reportedly persuaded by Senator Kwankwaso to contest the 2023 election under the NNPP banner, articulated his decision as a necessary step. His resignation letter explicitly stated that the persistent leadership tussle at the national level had created an untenable environment, making it exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, for him to effectively discharge his legislative duties and provide the quality representation his constituents in Kano Municipal deserved. He underscored that his decision was underpinned by the rights conferred upon him by Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and Article 7.1 of the NNPP Constitution, alongside other relevant legal provisions.
Despite his exit, Engr. Koki conveyed his appreciation to the NNPP for the opportunity to have served under its platform. He acknowledged the invaluable experience and trust he had garnered during his tenure with the party, reflecting a measured tone in his departure. However, his resignation marks a notable addition to an escalating series of key defections plaguing the Kwankwaso-led NNPP, particularly in Kano State.
In recent months, the party has experienced significant setbacks with the loss of several high-profile figures. These include Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, who represented Kano South, and Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, both of whom have since returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC). These successive departures highlight growing internal challenges and potential fissures within the party structure, casting a shadow over its stability and influence in the region.
As of the time this report was filed, there had been no official comment or statement regarding Koki’s resignation from either Senator Kwankwaso himself or the NNPP state chairman, Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa. The silence from the party's top brass leaves observers anticipating further developments regarding the impact of these high-profile defections on the NNPP's political standing in Kano and nationally.
