Polestar 5 Unveiled: The £90k+ Dual-Motor Rocket Ship That's Make-or-Break

Polestar officially unveiled its new flagship, the Polestar 5, a four-door, five-passenger electric grand tourer, at the IAA Munich event. Developed from the Precept concept first showcased in 2020, the production model maintains much of the original design while introducing Polestar's first in-house platform, its own electric motor, and an 800-volt electrical system for fast charging. This pivotal launch comes as Polestar faces significant challenges, including a change in leadership, a billion-dollar loss in Q2 2025, and an ongoing struggle to gain market share in the U.S., where sales accounted for only 8% in the first half of 2025 compared to 77% in Europe. The Polestar 5 is therefore a crucial test for the brand to convert its design and engineering promises into tangible market success.
The exterior design of the Polestar 5 closely mirrors the Precept concept, featuring sleek surfacing, slim “dual-blade” headlights (reminiscent of Volvo’s “Thor’s hammer” DRLs but cleaved in two), and a low nose incorporating Polestar’s SmartZone camera and radar array. The vehicle boasts frameless glass, retractable door handles, and an extended roofline contributing to a claimed drag coefficient of 0.24. To maximize rear-seat space without compromising its coupe-like proportions, the Polestar 5, similar to the Polestar 4 SUV, utilizes a digital rearview mirror and a virtual rear window setup, allowing structural elements to be moved rearward. A massive panoramic glass roof, measuring 78 by 49 inches, enhances the cabin’s sense of space and compensates for the absence of rear glass. The striking aesthetics are further complemented by sharply sculpted character lines and a distinctive Kamm-tail design. Six exterior colors, including two matte grey finishes, will be available.
Inside, the Polestar 5 offers a 4+1 seating configuration, primarily optimized for four occupants. Recaro-developed front seats are low-set and notably bolstered, while the rear seats provide individual recline, heating, cooling, and massage functions. A foldable center armrest allows for a fifth passenger in a pinch, though the space is best suited for a child. Each primary occupant benefits from their own climate-control zone. The interior heavily emphasizes sustainability, incorporating flax-based carbon-fiber alternatives like ampliTex from Swiss supplier Bcomp, carpets made from Econyl (derived from recycled fishing nets and carpets), and a headliner from recycled plastic. Upholstery options include synthetic MicroTech or Bridge of Weir Nappa leather, sourced from food industry byproducts, aligning with a growing trend among luxury brands to offer eco-conscious material choices.
The driver interface includes a low seating position, an upright steering wheel, a 9.0-inch digital instrument cluster mounted to the column, and a head-up display. A 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen, running Android Automotive OS with Google built-in, provides comprehensive navigation and infotainment. Audio is delivered via Polestar’s own setup or an optional 21-speaker, 1,680-watt Bowers & Wilkins system, complemented by active noise cancellation. Safety and driver assistance are managed by 11 cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and interior monitoring, informing the Pilot Assist system (imported from Volvo) for lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control up to 93 mph. The Polestar 5 also features a subtle charge status indicator light integrated into the black trim of the roofline, pulsing faster as the battery charges until a desired state is reached.
The Polestar 5 debuts the company’s new bonded aluminum Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA), an in-house platform designed to be lightweight, rigid, and comprised of sustainably sourced alloys. Polestar claims its torsional stiffness surpasses that of some supercars. The suspension features a compact control-arm front setup, allowing for the low nose, and Brembo brakes shared with the Polestar 3, which are 26 pounds lighter here. The standard Dual Motor model uses passive dampers, while the Performance variant includes adaptive magnetorheological (MagneRide) dampers. Wheel sizes range from 20 to 22 inches, fitted with Michelin tires. Cargo capacity includes a 2.3 cubic foot frunk and a 13 cubic foot trunk.
Two versions will be offered at launch. The Dual Motor model delivers 748 hp and 599 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds. The Performance model ups the ante with 884 hp and 749 lb-ft, cutting the 0–60 mph sprint to 3.1 seconds. Both are electronically limited to 155 mph. The 112-kWh (106 usable) battery, utilizing lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide (NMC) chemistry, supports 800-volt charging at up to 350 kW, allowing a 10–80 percent recharge in as little as 22 minutes.
