Plateau Governor Mutfwang's Shocking PDP Exit and APC Move
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has formally resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and is set to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This significant political shift comes about two weeks after the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, initially announced the governor's defection.
Mutfwang's resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 29, 2025, addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Ampang West Ward, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State. The letter, personally signed by the governor, formally notified his immediate withdrawal from the PDP. He was elected governor in 2023 on the PDP platform and is currently seeking a second term in office.
In his resignation letter, Governor Mutfwang expressed profound appreciation to the PDP for providing him with the political platform to participate in the democratic process and acknowledged the support of party leaders, members, and supporters. He explained that his decision was driven by "the realities of the moment" and his unwavering commitment to "purposeful leadership, clarity of direction, and effective service delivery," compelling him to seek an alternative political platform.
An additional statement, made available to newsmen by Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, further elaborated on the strategic nature of this move. Mutfwang's decision to join the APC is considered to be a well-considered step taken in the "overriding interest of the people of Plateau State." It aims to "better align the state’s development objectives with the policies and programmes of the Federal Government," thereby "accelerating growth and delivering greater dividends of democracy." The governor also reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to providing purposeful leadership, promoting inclusive governance, and championing unity across Plateau State, stressing that breaking barriers of division remains central to achieving collective growth and sustainable development.
Nentawe Yilwatda, a native of Plateau State and the APC National Chairman, had first announced Mutfwang's defection during the party’s 14th National Caucus meeting at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on December 18, 2025. Yilwatda hailed the move as a strategic gain for the ruling party, highlighting its significance in consolidating APC's influence in the North-central geopolitical zone. With Mutfwang's defection, Yilwatda stated that "the entire North-Central region is now governed by the APC," which significantly impacts the party's national outlook and electoral prospects. Mr. Mutfwang joins a growing list of state governors who have left the PDP for the APC, including those from Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Enugu states.
The formal registration and presentation of the APC membership card to Governor Mutfwang are scheduled to take place on Friday at the Victoria Gowon Hall, Government House, Rayfield. Following this, the governor will proceed to the Plateau State Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress at Kalwa House, Yakubu Gowon Way, Jos, where he will formally interface with party leaders and members. This event is being described as a "historic occasion," with an open invitation extended to all party faithful, political associates, supporters, admirers, and well-wishers.
