Plateau Governor Mutfwang Ditches PDP for APC, Sparks Betrayal Cry

Governor Caleb Mutfwang's recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ignited a significant political controversy in Plateau State, drawing sharply contrasting reactions from his former party and his new political affiliation. The Plateau State chapter of the PDP vehemently condemned the governor's move, characterizing it as a "betrayal of trust" and a "slap on the face of the people" who had placed their faith in him against all odds.
Hon. Choji Dalyop, the State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, addressing journalists in Jos, stated that Governor Mutfwang chose to prioritize personal ambition over the collective welfare of the Plateau people, a decision the party would not take lightly. Dalyop clarified that the party was never consulted by the governor regarding this matter, refuting claims to the contrary. He further asserted that there were no justifiable constitutional grounds for such a resignation and subsequent defection without the automatic vacating of the governorship seat. The PDP spokesman labeled the defection as "an act of political opportunism that subverts the total will of the electorate, and a pursuit of personal interests over the collective good of the Plateau people." The party urged the people of Plateau State to hold Governor Mutfwang accountable for his actions and reject any attempts to seek re-election under the APC platform. Furthermore, the PDP issued a warning to the Plateau State chapter of the APC against accepting Mutfwang with open arms, stating that doing so would render them complicit in the betrayal of the people. Dalyop reiterated the PDP's condemnation of the governor's action as inconsistent with democratic norms of trust, integrity, and accountability, while appealing to supporters and the public to remain calm and steadfast. He also assured party members that the PDP remains strong, united, and committed to participating in all upcoming elections, focusing on delivering good governance and democratic dividends, despite what he termed "temporary setbacks orchestrated by individuals lacking genuine party loyalty and discipline."
Conversely, Governor Caleb Mutfwang was formally presented with his All Progressives Congress (APC) membership card, marked 001, at a ceremony held at the Government House in Jos. The event, which took place at Victoria Gowon Hall, saw a large gathering of APC stakeholders, party leaders, and prominent political figures from both within and outside Plateau State. Governor Mutfwang described his decision to join the ruling party as "divinely guided" and undertaken in the "overall interest of Plateau State."
He explained that his move was the result of "fervent prayers, wide consultations and strict adherence to the constitution of the party," affirming his wholehearted embrace of the APC as a platform to advance peace, unity, and development in the state. Mutfwang paid tribute to his supporters who stood by him during the 2023 general elections, which he characterized as one of the most challenging in the state's history due to intense rivalry and prolonged legal battles culminating at the Supreme Court. He expressed gratitude to all who tirelessly labored and made sacrifices, attributing his victory to divine grace. Mutfwang also conveyed appreciation to his former associates in the PDP, emphasizing that his defection should not be perceived as an act of hostility, but rather as a pursuit of "broader consultation and the collective interest of Plateau State."
