PDP’s Enugu Resilience: Acting Chairman Asserts Party’s Strength Despite High-Profile Defections

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State is facing renewed political turbulence following the recent defection of Governor Peter Mbah and a large contingent of his loyalists to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The development has sparked widespread speculation about the party’s stability and influence in the state’s shifting political landscape. However, the acting chairman of the PDP, Barr Steve Orurua, has dismissed concerns of collapse, asserting that the party remains “resilient, active, and deeply rooted” in Enugu’s political fabric.
Speaking to journalists at the party’s Enugu secretariat, Orurua, who assumed leadership after the resignation of the former state chairman, reaffirmed his confidence in the PDP’s enduring presence and relevance. “Yes, some members have left, including the governor and his supporters, but the PDP in Enugu State remains strong,” he said. “We are focused on rebuilding, revitalizing, and reconnecting with our grassroots supporters. The party is very much alive.”
Orurua acknowledged the challenges that accompany such large-scale defections but framed them as an opportunity for introspection and renewal. He called on PDP members and loyalists to close ranks, emphasizing unity and solidarity as the foundation for the party’s resurgence. According to him, maintaining morale among the rank and file is critical to sustaining the PDP’s long-standing position as a formidable political force in Enugu and the wider South East region.
“We must see this as a phase of reawakening,” Orurua urged. “The PDP has gone through difficult times before and emerged stronger. What matters now is our collective resolve to stay united, reenergize our structures, and engage the people of Enugu with sincerity and purpose.”
The acting chairman also reiterated his commitment to transparent internal democracy, pledging to introduce credible and competitive primary elections to produce high-quality candidates for upcoming polls. He stressed that fairness, inclusivity, and accountability would be central to his leadership approach, ensuring that all members, old and new, are given a level playing field.
While acknowledging that the defection of Governor Mbah and his political allies represents a short-term setback, Orurua insisted that the PDP’s strength lies in its deep-rooted networks across the state’s 17 local government areas. He described the recent developments as “a test of character,” noting that the party’s structures, from ward to state level, remain functional and committed to advancing its core values.
Political analysts in Enugu suggest that the coming months will be crucial for the PDP as it works to consolidate its base and counter the growing influence of the APC. Yet, Orurua’s message seeks to project stability and confidence, a strategic move aimed at reassuring both members and the electorate that the PDP is far from disintegrating.
“The purpose of this message,” Orurua concluded, “is to reassure the people of Enugu State that the PDP is still very much alive. We are rebuilding, we are united, and we will continue to serve as a credible voice for the people.”
Despite recent turbulence, the statement underscores the PDP’s determination to adapt, reorganize, and remain a central player in Enugu’s political future, a testament to the enduring resilience of one of Nigeria’s oldest political institutions.
