Ozzy Osbourne Documentary Pulled by BBC Hours Before Airing, Sparking Mystery

A planned BBC One documentary titled "Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home" was abruptly pulled from schedules on Monday, August 18, just hours before its anticipated airing. The film, described as an intimate and moving account of the final three years of Ozzy Osbourne's life, chronicled his and Sharon's planned return to the UK after 25 years in Los Angeles and his preparation for a farewell performance. The BBC spokesperson confirmed the film "moved in the schedules" and that "new premiere details will be shared in due course," replacing it with "Fake or Fortune" on BBC One and iPlayer.
Ozzy Osbourne tragically died at the age of 76 on July 22, just weeks after taking to the stage one final time with his bandmates at Villa Park in Birmingham. The documentary was meant to capture this pivotal period, including his health battles due to Parkinson's disease and a series of neck and spine surgeries, which caused him constant pain. Despite these immense challenges, Ozzy was determined to perform, undertaking singing lessons almost daily to prepare for what he envisioned as going "out with a bang." His resolve stemmed from a deep desire to play for the fans who had given him and Sharon an extraordinary life, even as he was tended to by nurses around the clock.
The final performance at Villa Park was a show-stopping spectacular. An emotional Ozzy confessed to the crowd, "I don’t know what to say, man, I’ve been laid up for like six years... You have no idea how I feel – thank you from the bottom of my heart." He performed five songs in his own set, concluding with "Crazy Train" amid a rain of confetti, and then rejoined Black Sabbath for the first time in 20 years, ending with a powerful rendition of "Paranoid." This "final encore" meant everything to him, as he told RadioX, expressing gratitude to his fans and the significance of performing in his hometown, where he had cherished childhood memories of watching football at the Aston Villa stadium.
The documentary, which featured Ozzy's wife Sharon and their children Kelly and Jack, was never fully completed. It aimed to be a testament to the strength of their family, capturing their acceptance of Ozzy becoming increasingly unwell. Executive producers Ben Wicks and Colin Barr described it as an "inspiring and poignant" account of Ozzy's determination and intense love for his family. Amidst these events, his daughter Kelly Osbourne revealed her engagement to boyfriend Sid Wilson, with the proposal taking place backstage at her father's final Black Sabbath gig.
Originally pitched as a reality show-like series called "Home to Roost" in 2002, chronicling their return to England, the film evolved as Ozzy's health deteriorated. Despite the challenges of relocating and the toll on his close-knit family, Ozzy, known for his determination, blistering honesty, and razor-sharp sense of humor, was committed to achieving his goals. The film aimed to capture his heroic fight to get fit enough to perform at the star-studded "Back to the Beginning" show, which also featured sets from bands like Metallica, Slayer, and Guns N’ Roses. BBC's head of documentary commissioning, Clare Sillery, expressed hope that the film would bring comfort and joy to fans celebrating his extraordinary life.
