Oyo's Kidnapped: Oriire Abduction Crisis Deepens as Community, NGOs Demand Action

The abduction of 47 pupils and teachers from Yawota, Esiele, and Ahoro-Esiele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15 has drawn widespread concern and condemnation from various groups and authorities. The victims, aged between two and 15 years, remain in captivity following coordinated attacks on the affected communities.
In response to the crisis, the Child Protection Network Nigeria (CPN) and a coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have urgently called on federal and state authorities to intensify efforts for the safe and speedy rescue of the victims. During a press conference in Ibadan, Mrs. Rosemary Odigbo, Oyo State Coordinator of CPN, emphasized the fundamental right of every child to education in a safe and secure environment, describing schools as sacred spaces that must be protected from violence. The coalition advocated for strengthening security around schools, implementing additional safety measures, and fencing vulnerable educational facilities to prevent future attacks. They also urged the Oyo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion to prepare for the rehabilitation and reintegration of the victims, proposing psychosocial support, trauma counselling, medical assessment, and family reunification programmes.
Adding their voice, the Muslim Community of Oyo State vehemently condemned the alleged Sharia-related demands made by the abductors, declaring that terrorists do not represent Islamic values and cannot speak for Muslims. In a release signed by its leadership, including Alhaji Ishaq Kunle Sanni (Chairman) and Alhaji Murisiku Abidemi Siyanbade (Secretary-General), the community stressed that Islam strictly forbids kidnapping, terrorism, and extortion, and that legitimate Sharia advocates for justice, peace, and the protection of human life. Citing the Holy Qur'an (Chapter 3 verse 32), they emphasized the severe prohibition against taking an innocent life. The Muslim community reiterated its full support for law enforcement, urged vigilance among residents, and announced a special prayer session for the speedy and safe return of the abductees, scheduled for Sunday, June 7th, at the Yidi Agodi Praying Ground, Ibadan.
Assurances have also come from the legislative arm, with Hon. Johnson Ogundele, the lawmaker representing Oriire State Constituency, confirming that efforts are ongoing to secure the safe release of the abducted individuals. Speaking after raising a Matter of Urgent Public Importance in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Ogundele stated that security agencies, community leaders, and critical stakeholders are working tirelessly, appealing to residents to remain calm and cooperate by providing credible information.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State acknowledged the gravity of the situation, calling for patience as all efforts are focused on bringing the abductees back safely. While receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Air Force, led by Air Officer Commanding, Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar A. Suleh, Governor Makinde expressed gratitude for the Air Force's substantial support since the incident occurred. He highlighted that while the two Diamond-42 Surveillance Aircraft purchased by the Oyo State Government are still being assembled, the Nigerian Air Force provided its own Diamond-42 aircraft for surveillance, offering real-time information crucial to the rescue process. The Governor affirmed the state's commitment to deepening its relationship with the Air Force, noting the strategic importance of such platforms for enhancing security within Oyo State and its environs.
Air Vice Marshal Suleh, on behalf of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday K. Aneke, conveyed sympathy to Governor Makinde and the residents, assuring them of the Nigerian Air Force's continued dedication and services towards a swift resolution. He also appreciated the Governor's support for Air Force units involved in search and rescue efforts, as well as for various infrastructural developments beneficial to the Air Force in the state.
The collective efforts underscore a strong determination by all stakeholders—including government, security agencies, civil society organisations, and community leaders—to secure the safe return of the pupils and teachers, protect educational environments, and prevent future incidents of this nature, while also providing crucial support to the affected families.
