OSP Petition Firestorm: Miracles Aboagye Defends Bawumia on 300 Pickup Claims, Awaits Official Response!

A petition has been formally submitted to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in Ghana, targeting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and a leading political figure. Filed by Solomon Owusu and his legal team, the petition calls for a thorough investigation into Dr. Bawumia’s public declarations concerning the procurement of over 300 pickup vehicles for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his claims of raising record sums of money for political campaigns. The petitioners argue that such statements raise significant questions regarding the sources of these funds, potential abuse of office, and possible breaches of Ghana’s political financing laws.
Responding to these developments, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for the Bawumia Campaign, has downplayed the concerns, asserting that political fundraising is a common and legitimate practice within the Ghanaian political landscape. In an interview on Joy FM's Top Story on Wednesday, September 17, Mr. Aboagye emphasized that mobilizing resources through donations, fundraising dinners, short codes, and contributions from supporters is a routine activity for politicians. He stated, “I don’t think it’s something that is such a big deal. It is one of the easiest things for a politician worth his salt to do — to mobilize resources.”
Aboagye further explained that campaign teams frequently organize fundraising events, establish donation desks in offices, and accept contributions from individuals, groups, and organizations, with some donations even being made public. While acknowledging every citizen's right to petition, he insisted that there is nothing inherently alarming in the allegations. He maintained that raising significant resources, including 300 or even 500 pickups, is entirely possible through legitimate mobilization efforts involving friends, family, and acquaintances. He stressed that the intent behind such actions matters most, and in this instance, there is nothing untoward.
The campaign team also confirmed Dr. Bawumia's readiness to cooperate with the OSP. Miracles Aboagye stated that Dr. Bawumia would formally respond to the petition once the OSP initiates its official processes. He noted that the campaign had not yet formally received the petition but would examine it to understand the issues once it arrived. He reiterated that Dr. Bawumia would respond accordingly when the OSP’s procedures commence, underscoring the campaign’s belief that political fundraising is a normal and transparent aspect of Ghanaian politics.
