Oscar Hopeful's Shocking Streaming Flop: Netflix Western Masterpiece Stumbles Despite 95% RT Score!

Sci-fi enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the second season of Joel Edgerton’s series, Dark Matter, but last year, Edgerton also starred in a critically acclaimed Western drama, Train Dreams, which has faced challenges on streaming despite its Oscar ambitions.
Train Dreams, a sweeping Western drama, features Joel Edgerton alongside William H. Macy and Felicity Jones. The film centers on Robert Granier, played by Edgerton, who discovers profound meaning in the simple life of a logger. Released on November 7, 2025, with a runtime of 102 minutes, the film is an exclusive Netflix streaming title. Directed by Clint Bentley, who also co-wrote the script with Greg Kwedar, Train Dreams is based on Denis Johnson's acclaimed novella of the same name. The creative duo of Bentley and Kwedar also collaborated on the A24 drama Sing Sing, starring Colman Domingo, and are currently working on another project with Will Poulter and Rachel Brosnahan.
Despite its pedigree, Train Dreams is currently struggling to maintain visibility on Netflix. While it initially performed well, reaching the top 10 globally, it has since dropped out of the global top 10 in every country. This decline is particularly concerning as the film is Netflix's primary contender for the upcoming 2026 Academy Awards. Critically, Train Dreams boasts an impressive 95% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a strong 90% audience score. However, it has garnered a relatively low number of verified audience reviews (only 50), which might impact its awards season momentum. The film recently missed out on two Golden Globe awards, raising fears it might face a similar fate at the Oscars.
Meanwhile, fans of Joel Edgerton's other major project, Dark Matter, are keen to know about its second season. While Apple TV has not yet made an official announcement regarding the release date, Edgerton himself hinted to Collider late last year that Dark Matter Season 2 is expected to arrive sometime in the middle of the year, likely during the summer months. This suggests that the first teaser for the new season could be released in the coming months. The first season of Dark Matter adapted the entirety of Blake Crouch’s novel. For its second season, Crouch will remain at the helm, guiding the series into entirely new narrative territory beyond the source material.
