Original TV Spider-Man and Sesame Street Puppeteer Danny Seagren Dies at 81

Danny Seagren, a celebrated puppeteer and actor known for his diverse contributions to children’s television, including an early portrayal of Spider-Man and appearances as Big Bird on "Sesame Street," passed away on November 10 at the age of 81. His family announced his passing through an online obituary, though the cause of death was not specified. Born on November 15, 1943, in Minneapolis, Seagren was remembered by his family as a talented “dancer, writer, and producer,” in addition to his renowned work as a puppeteer and puppet maker.
Seagren’s career was significantly shaped by his association with Jim Henson, which led to his notable appearances on “Sesame Street.” On the iconic children’s show, he occasionally brought Big Bird to life, not only for the television series but also at live events and during memorable appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” His puppetry talents extended beyond “Sesame Street”; he also created puppets and performed characters for other beloved programs such as “Captain Kangaroo,” “Who’s Afraid Of Opera,” and “Miss Peach.” His work on “Miss Peach” earned him a prestigious Daytime Emmy Award.
One of Seagren’s groundbreaking roles was being the first person to portray Spider-Man on television. He took on the role for “The Electric Company,” a popular educational children’s show that also featured stars like Rita Moreno and Morgan Freeman, introducing many young viewers to the friendly neighborhood superhero. Later in life, Seagren found joy in connecting with fans at various conventions, who by then were adults, reflecting on his impactful career.
After a career spent working in New York City, Seagren eventually retired to Little River, South Carolina. He is survived by his long-term companion, Kate Vereau, his brother Dr. Stephen L. Seagren, his sister-in-law Jill R. Seagren, and his nephew Sean G. Seagren. His family conveyed that “Danny will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and those throughout the community he loved living in.” A celebration of his life is planned for a later date, and the family has encouraged memorial donations to be made to the Entertainment Community Fund.
