Olivia Rodrigo's Dream Collab: Pop Star Joins Forces with Idol Robert Smith
Olivia Rodrigo shares her excitement about collaborating with idol Robert Smith of The Cure on her new album, "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love." The duet, "What’s Wrong With Me," debuted live at Primavera Sound, marking one of several Cure-influenced tracks on the upcoming release.
Pop star Olivia Rodrigo is experiencing immense excitement over her collaboration with one of her musical idols, Robert Smith, the frontman of The Cure. Days before the official release of her new album, titled "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love," Rodrigo sent a heartfelt letter to her fans, detailing her disbelief and joy about the duet "What’s Wrong With Me."
In her handwritten letter, distributed via her email subscription service on Monday, June 8, Rodrigo reflected on the debut of the unreleased collaboration at Primavera Sound in Barcelona the previous night. She expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "I’ve been insanely excited to tell you guys about this song & it’s been so hard to keep it a secret! It’s the first feature I’ve ever done on an album and I actually cannot believe I got to do it with Robert Smith!"
Rodrigo continued to praise Smith, whom she considers a significant influence: "Somebody pinch me!!! Robert has been soundtracking my life for as long as I can remember. He has written some of my favorite songs of all time. His music moves me & inspires me to a degree that is hard to put into words." She also revealed that she has spent time with him over the past year, experiencing his "generosity & graciousness" firsthand. The singer concluded her sentiments by stating, "I am in disbelief that this song exists and I cannot wait for it to come out officially!"
The new album, "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love," is scheduled to drop on Friday, June 12. Robert Smith's influence is evident across multiple tracks on the project. The Billboard Hot 100-topping lead single, "Drop Dead," features a reference to The Cure’s classic "Just Like Heaven." The album’s second single is explicitly titled "The Cure." The recently previewed duet, "What’s Wrong With Me," completes this trifecta of Cure-related songs on Rodrigo’s third studio album.
Thousands of fans witnessed the surprise live debut of "What’s Wrong With Me" during Rodrigo’s set at Primavera Sound on Sunday, June 7. Robert Smith joined her on stage for the tender ballad, where they sang lyrics such as, "My head is spinning and my stomach is sick/ Say I’m in love, so it’s hard to admit/ I can’t eat, I can’t sleep/ I think you’re what’s wrong with me." This was not their first joint performance, as Rodrigo and Smith had previously shared the stage at her Glastonbury set in July of the previous year.
