Official Transfer Alert: Terem Moffi Joins FC Porto, Makes History for Nigerian Talent
FC Porto has officially announced the acquisition of Nigerian striker Terem Moffi from French club OGC Nice. The Super Eagles forward joins the Portuguese giants on a loan deal set to run until the conclusion of the current season, with an included option for a permanent transfer valued at €8 million. At 26 years old, Moffi becomes a distinguished addition to Porto’s roster, marking him as only the fifth Nigerian footballer to represent the Dragons. This exclusive group includes past players such as Abraham Marcus, Chidozie Awaziem, Mikel Agu, and the club's current defender, Zaidu Sanusi.
Among the Nigerian contingent at Porto, Zaidu Sanusi, who arrived from Santa Clara in 2020, stands out as the most accomplished. Sanusi has amassed an impressive 141 appearances and scored eight goals for the club, setting a notable benchmark that Moffi will undoubtedly aspire to surpass in Porto’s iconic blue and white colours. Moffi's arrival follows a challenging period in France, where he had been sidelined since late November after an incident involving supporters at Nice, impacting his recent playing time.
At his new club, Moffi will don the number 29 shirt. His move also facilitates a reunion with familiar faces, including midfielder Pablo Rosario and head coach Francesco Farioli. Moffi had previously enjoyed his most productive spell on the Côte d’Azur under Farioli’s guidance, suggesting a promising synergy for his tenure at Porto. This connection could be pivotal as he looks to regain his top form and contribute significantly to the team's objectives.
Terem Moffi's journey to European football began in Calabar, Nigeria, near the country’s border with Cameroon. At the tender age of 17, he left his homeland to pursue a professional football education in England, enrolling at the Buckswood Football Academy. This early departure set the stage for a career that would take him through various European leagues, each step building on his reputation as a formidable striker.
His professional breakthrough came in Lithuania, far from the major European footballing spotlights. Prolific stints with Žalgiris Kaunas and FK Riteriai showcased his rare combination of physical prowess and clinical finishing instincts. His remarkable performance, yielding 20 goals in just 21 league matches, earned him a transfer to Belgian side Kortrijk. Although his time there was curtailed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Moffi still made a significant impact, netting six goals in 11 appearances, which quickly caught the attention of French clubs.
His impressive form led to a move to Lorient in Ligue 1, where his ascent in European football rapidly accelerated. In the 2020-21 season, he scored 15 league goals, a performance that not only solidified his place in French football but also earned him his Super Eagles debut under coach Gernot Rohr in June 2021 against Cameroon. Further success followed, including a blistering start to the 2022-23 campaign, where he scored 12 goals in 18 matches before his eventual transfer to OGC Nice.
During his time at Nice, Moffi scored 20 goals across all competitions, with 11 of those coming under the management of Francesco Farioli. However, a combination of injuries and other interruptions limited his recent output, leading to the current loan move.
Now, at Porto, a stadium he is familiar with after starting in Nice’s 3-0 defeat there in November, Moffi is expected to provide power, a strong presence, and a consistent goal threat within the penalty area. His contributions will be crucial as the Dragons pursue success in both domestic competitions and on the European stage, aiming to leverage his experience and goal-scoring ability.
