Nigerian D'Tigress Dominate Philippines with Thrilling 101-84 Victory in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria's senior women's basketball team, D'Tigress, demonstrated remarkable resilience and an emphatic second-half performance to defeat the Philippines 101–84 on Saturday. This victory marked their second win in three games at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament held in Lyon, France. The African champions, who had faced a challenging outing against South Korea (a 77–60 defeat) just two days prior, showcased their ability to respond with renewed intensity and overturn a significant deficit.

The game began with D'Tigress struggling to find their rhythm, allowing the Philippines to take an early lead. The Asian team capitalized on defensive lapses from Nigeria, winning the first quarter 26–21. By halftime, the Philippines had established a comfortable nine-point advantage, leading 51–42 after winning the second quarter 25–21. Despite the slow start, D'Tigress remained within striking distance and showed signs of growing confidence as the game progressed.

The turning point of the match arrived in the third quarter when Coach Rena Wakama's side dramatically raised their intensity. D'Tigress dominated this period, outscoring the Philippines 34–21. This powerful surge not only erased the halftime deficit but also firmly swung the momentum in Nigeria's favor. Their improved defensive pressure and swifter ball movement effectively disrupted the Philippines’ offensive flow. Nigeria maintained this tempo through the final quarter, extending their dominance by outscoring their opponents 25–12, ultimately sealing the victory and surpassing the 100-point mark in commanding fashion.

Statistics from the game underscored Nigeria’s comprehensive superiority. D'Tigress displayed strong teamwork and ball movement, registering 36 assists compared to the Philippines’ 24. They also asserted control on the boards, dominating the rebounding battle with 58 rebounds against the Philippines’ 33. This reflected a much sharper offensive display than in their previous loss to South Korea. Several players contributed significantly to the team's success, sharing scoring responsibilities and orchestrating the offense. Victoria Macaulay, a consistent scorer, played an important role, alongside experienced guard Ezinne Kalu. Other valuable contributions came from Nicole Enabosi, Elizabeth Balogun, Murjanatu Musa, and Ifunanya Okoro.

This decisive victory helped D'Tigress regain momentum in the tournament, particularly after the disappointment of their defeat to South Korea, where they struggled offensively and defensively. While the results in Lyon are important for team cohesion and strategy, Nigeria has already secured qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup. This qualification was achieved by winning a historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket title in 2025. Therefore, the current tournament primarily serves as crucial preparation for the upcoming global event, which is scheduled to take place later this year in Berlin, Germany. D’Tigress is scheduled to face France in their next game on Sunday, followed by their final campaign match against Germany on Monday.
