Nigeria's Historic Leap: First-Ever Olympic Beach Volleyball Qualification for LA28!

Nigeria has made a historic entry into the beach volleyball event at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, marking a significant milestone as the first Nigerian team ever to qualify for this particular Olympic discipline. This remarkable achievement was solidified on Saturday, August 22, after the Nigerian women's team delivered a commanding performance, defeating Morocco 2-0 (21-17, 21-10) in the final of the 2026 African Beach Volleyball Nations Championship held in Alexandria, Egypt.

This victory represents the culmination of years of persistent effort and perseverance for Nigeria, ending a series of past disappointments. The team had previously reached the continental final on three separate occasions, only to finish as runners-up each time. The triumph was met with widespread jubilation and national pride.

Engineer Musa Nimrod, the President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), expressed profound joy and described the qualification as a victory for the entire nation. "I wish to congratulate Nigerians and thank God. This is the fourth time we are going into the finals; we finished in second place on three occasions," Nimrod stated, reflecting on the team's journey. He added, "God has done it for us on our fourth trial and given us victory. It is not the Nigeria Volleyball Federation’s success alone but the entire nation."

Nimrod further emphasized the significance of this breakthrough, highlighting the federation's 16-year wait for such an accomplishment. "I want to say that after all these 16 years, today God has made it possible for the federation," he affirmed. In acknowledging the support that contributed to this success, the Secretary-General of CAVB Zone 3 extended commendations to the National Sports Commission and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, CGC Adewale Adeniyi, for their consistent backing and invaluable contributions to the development and advancement of volleyball within Nigeria.

Ultimately, this qualification is not just a win but a major milestone for Nigerian volleyball, as the country prepares to make its historic Olympic debut in beach volleyball at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, showcasing their talent on a global stage.
